I also want to became a Linux power user, but I know I have a long way to go before I earn this achievement. I’m fully motivated to use Antergos so I think it’s going to help me to attain my goal very quickly!
Feel free to contact me if I can help.
New Linux user |
No more Windows in my life No more Windows at home | In love with Antergos && Arch! | A lot to learn!
Thumbs up! It’s well done! I’m using GDM for now, but next time I install Antergos I will try this trick for sure!
Keep up the good work!
I’m still thinking about it. For now, It’s hard to get started at this time of the year (mid summer). If I decide to start deving a DE from scratch, it will be a little bit later in the year. October or November seems to be a more suitable time for me.
Also, I rally don’t want to give you false hopes guys! The chance I come to develop something good are very light! Plus, it’s going to be a very long process. Even if I start today and work on it every day, I can’t see how I can deliver something nice and reliable inside of a year or two. I have so much to learn! I’m a web developer doing good with high level language. I have no experience with C, C++, Python and I’m still new to linux. I gonna have to learn how to work with Wayland as well. Wayland documentations and tutorial seems impossible to find.
For now, It’s more like a dream than a reality. I can’t promisse anything. Let wait and see
I’d propose not to use GTK3 when you build your own DE.
In fact, if I start to dev my own DE, I plan to use no tool kit at all. No GTK, no Qt.
Seriously, Gnome is the DE I like the most of those I’ve tried so far, but it’s not perfect. They just proved me that they think the complete opposite way than I do and I don’t know if I can continue to use Gnome after that.
A part of me want to start to develop my own DE, but another part of me is Laughing Out Loud when I think of it. I know it’s a crazy idea to develop a DE… it require a lot of time, a lot of knowledge, it’s a very hard and complex task and you can’t think of doing it alone. But in the other hand, it can be very fun, it can be a very rewarding and educative process.
I can’t find a DE I enjoy as much as I want. So I’m left with two options right now. Use something I don’t enjoy to use that much… or try to develop my own DE that I think I will enjoy more.
To be, or not to be, that is the question.
@iSpeakVeryWell There may be more apps like synapse, you can try to look here https://alternativeto.net/software/synapse-launcher/?platform=linux
Good call! I use “alternative to” a lot too! I’ll check it, thank you!
Hi guys! Thank you for your good suggestion! I tried them all!
What was closest to what I’m looking for was synapse. I just wasn’t satisfied with the accuracy of the search result it provided. Otherwise, I would have kept it.
I already tried KDE in the past days and I didn’t liked it at all.
gno-menu was cool though. I prefer to have a launcher than a menu, but it’s very neat! It’s a good product. The search feature is only limited to application name in the menu and I find it’s not enough to my liking.
Beyond the fact that I hate the phonish style of application viewer of gnome, I really like the search feature behaviour of this screen. It’s a wide search that is very accurate in my opinion. I would like to have that same search result but in a launcher instead of in a view.
What I hate about gnome application viewer:
What I like-ish about gnome application viewer:
I’m sooo picky! 0_o
Thanks for the suggestion, it’s very appreciated!
I’m looking for a good application launcher. I’m actually using Gnome as DE and I’m not much a fan of the “Show application” view. In fact, I hate it. I want something more lightweight.
What I’m looking for is a kind of search box. You activate a shortcut and the search box come up and you type what you looking for, let’s say calc, and it search for calc, and it show you the calculator application in a list with everything that match calc, an than you click on it and a calculator appear in your face.
In fact, I like the search box in the “Show application” view. I hate how information are presented. This screen remind me of being on my phone and I hate that so much! lol I don’t want the “You’re using your phone” feeling anymore.
All suggestion are welcome! Thank you! :)
