• KDE - HDMI External Monitor

I have an ASUS Model VS248H-P HDMI 24 inch external monitor (specs [url:2gczfqod]http://www.asus.com/us/Monitors_Projectors/VS248HP/[/url:2gczfqod] )that I can’t get working with Antegros / KDE. I use a different laptop with Antegros Cinnamon and it works fine. (While I can’t blame KDE for this, I have never have good luck with KDE and multiple monitors. My primary desktop uses dual 18 inch external monitors in portrait mode and what Cinnamon and GNOME could get working perfectly in a few seconds, KDE couldn’t get working with hours of fiddling.)

At time 288 - connected HDMI cable.
At time 304 - selected Automatic settings.
Between time 304 - 382 tried moving display left or right instead of clone and tried setting DFP-0 as primary.
At time 328 - disconnected HDMI cable.

Description - The best I can get is with clone. But the HDMI screen flickers slowly. I get an image for a few seconds, then goes black. This repeats. Sometimes I just get a black screen with green snow/static - even when I can get an image going for a few seconds - dark areas of the screen show this green snow/static as well.

While I’d like to get this working, its not such a deal breaker that I’m going to change my desktop environment or graphics drivers. I’d like to see if there are some options to troubleshoot this as-is.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • I have an ASUS Model VS248H-P HDMI 24 inch external monitor (specs [url:2gczfqod]http://www.asus.com/us/Monitors_Projectors/VS248HP/[/url:2gczfqod] )that I can’t get working with Antegros / KDE.

  • Hi,

Does the Cinnamon laptop also have the NVIDIA driver? Have you tried using the nvidia-settings tool provided by the nvidia-utils package? You have to launch it as root from the command line I believe:

    sudo nvidia-settings

If that doesnt help. post the output of this command:[code:3eltnvq0]xrandr[/code:3eltnvq0]

    Cheers!

    Nope, uses Intel.

I just tried that. As soon as I plug in the HDMI cable the “X Server Display Configuration” option updates. It shows the external monitor as “Ancor Communications Inc VS248” with (Off) - (Is that another name for ASUS??) I change “Configuration” to “X screen 1” and the icons of 2 screens appear above with 1920x1080. Leave everything else as-is. As soon as I click Apply button I get a list of reasons why settings can not be completely applied.

I can select “Apply What is Possible” and “Cancel”. For all requested changes I have to click “Save to X Configuration” and restart the X server".

Before I try that, which configuration files should I backup?

  • Try deleting this file and then using Cinnamon Settings to arrange your displays how you want them. [code:361x1b9l]~/.config/monitors.xml[/code:361x1b9l]

Just to be clear, this laptop does not have Cinnamon. I was just referencing another laptop I tried which can use the external monitor with Linux, so I don’t think there is a problem with the monitor or the HDMI cable.

With that said, I do not have a “monitors.xml” in my ~/.config directory.

Are you suggesting I install Cinnamon just to configure the monitors and KDE will utilize this configuration?

  • Well of course not, I’m saying that if you were using Cinnamon that is what you would need to do…you know, just an FYI
