• Computer freezes suddenly

this happened couple times by now, happens once in two days.
when computer freeze it didn’t respond anything including sysreq and power buttons, also hard disk was making clicking noises
needed to press and hold power button to hard reset

My laptop is Satellite Radius 14 L40W-C-102:

    dmesg output

  • @tuxutku shouldn’t i be able to force reboot even harddisk stop working?
i couldn’t switched to terminal screen with ctrl+alt+f1 too

  • @tuxutku
Could there be some systemd timer running some heavy stuff at certain intervals?

Sometimes when I simply copy a large (~ 40GB) file from a SSD to another SSD, and try to start a terminal, the terminal does not show prompt but waits for a long time before showing it.
So something like that could really freeze (temporarily) a machine.

A tool for sending logs: https://forum.antergos.com/topic/10586/eat-logs
Install eat: wget -q https://github.com/manuel-192/eat/raw/master/PKGBUILD && makepkg -sic

  • dmesg shows realy nothing unusual, also freeze is happening after login, so a journal from time the freeze happens will be good to see.

    journalctl --since "1 hour ago"

after a freeze, or to autopastebin and get the url to it:

journalctl --since "1 hour ago" | curl -F [email protected] https://ptpb.pw/?u=1

[updates once a week] = [90% less problems]
    how to add system logs:
    wget http://bit.ly/2GCG9k2 && sh 2GCG9k2

  • If you have the possibility to try with another drive, you should. A disk making clicking noises doesn’t mean much good. If not, disconnect the drive and stress test the system using a LiveCD.

  • @tuxutku I’ve always thought that a clicking noise from your hard drive is an audible warning that it’s failing. pretty good article on sounds I think

i have runned journalctl --since 2018-05-06 --until 2018-05-07 | curl -F [email protected] https://ptpb.pw/?u=1 because it happened yesterday,
but i will still do journalctl --since "1 hour ago" | curl -F [email protected] https://ptpb.pw/?u=1 if freezing happens again
    dmesg output 2

computer is not mine and its a ultrabook, there is no easy access to hard disk

  • i also have to mention that i run boinc while i am not at home and its running about 4-6 hours with both gpu and cpu tasks (cpu reaches 81 degrees), than after i stop boinc and browse the web about 2-3 hours. motherboard might flexing and causing cpu to disconnect, but it was happening before i started to run boinc so it might not the cause of it

  • @manuel

it happens usually while i browse the web and even computer is idle

  • @n_mag

i will test hard disk without writing on it , thanks for the website

computer freeze again but didn’t make harddisk clicking noise
    i reboot and immediately runned:

(journalctl --since "1 hour ago"; echo; echo; echo; echo 'dmesg output begins'; echo; echo; dmesg) |curl -F [email protected] https://ptpb.pw/?u=1

    dmesg and journalctl output
