• Update today 5-1-18 Had an issue

This is just info to whom it may concern.

I did update and it would seem linuxlts broke I guess.

    Gave error
Failed to start Samba AD Daemon see systemctl status samba.service for details

    and GUI would not start.

I rebooted and selected linuxlts fallback, but didn’t work.

Rebooted again and selected linux and gui loaded then I found
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux_Archive#How_to_restore_all_packages_to_a_specific_date

and followed the mirrorlist update section and backed up mirror list then put this line in
    Server=https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2018/04/28/$repo/os/$arch

    then
    sudo pacman -Syyuu

Put mirrorlist file back to original contents,
    then rebooted,
and back up and running linux lts

so far as I can tell, everything back to normal but not going to update till weekend.

Hope it helps with something but I don’t know what exactly caused the issue.

  • Thanks for that, I did run the cmds, and it seemed to load…after it said it couldn’t find it.

I went ahead and checked the updates and updated everything except linux & linux-lts…4 updates not done.

After a reboot everything worked so I updated the 4 remaining updates that were linux related.

    Upon reboot,linux-lts error
light display manager failed to start see lightdm.service for details

I rebooted under linux kernal and it loaded to gui.
Fixed and reverted to same date as above.

Rebooted again and did updates to all except for 4 the linux linux-lts and other 2 related files, headers and something, ah linux-firmware…

this is where I currently am at, but don’t know what to do to find logs from multiple reboots ago.

sry if I sound panicky as this is my everyday machine lol

tell me how I can help.

  • @firespray Thanks a lot. This was right on point and saved my day! It had nothing to do with smbd renamed to smb or anything.

Maybe it has something to do with proprietary nvidia drivers (extra/nvidia-lts) combined with the lts kernel ?

My experience with the latest linux lts kernel update (among others, i.e. libinput and the standard 4,.16 kernel):

It hangs at “Reached target Graphical Interface._] Reached target Multi-Use” (now new line in between, then my screen ends).
Switching to a tty (i.e. CTRL ALT F5) doesn’t work, even rebooting with CTRL ALT DEL works only after multiple attempts. As if the keyboard input isn’t recognized.

With the standard 4.16 kernel (I do not use this per default and haven’t proprietary nvidia drivers installed for this) it stucks at the same place during boot. However Switching to a TTY works - with constant screen flickering and occasionally missed keyboard strokes (which leads to like 5 tries to input my passwords).
Getting the archive packackes from 2018-04-28 as described above, fixes the issue.

I missed to check my Xorg.log (its overwritten now) - journalctl doesn’t show anything special at a first glance. I’m out of time to debug this further for now…

  • @pro-w-zieger

I’m glad it helped and I’ve got nvidia as well so maybe soon we’ll find out what it is.

I’m trying to catch what it’s saying during shutdown as well but it goes too fast…
something about old root. That’s not a complaint about shutdown speed btw
I’d rather it shutdown in 10 seconds vs windows 90 seconds lol

I don’t want to reinstall, I’d rather know the problem and fix so I can update, but
now that /home is on it’s own partition, I don’t fully object to it lol

  • I just switched to nouveau and anything works again with all kernels installed (LTS and standard). This is not a gaming machine, just a laptop from work so nouveau is perfectly fine. No issues so far.

However There is a new linux-lts release since yesterday afternoon (Berlin time). Maybe it fixes this issue.

I have this here too, since my system is still shuting down in less than 5 seconds, i didn’t carry about it 😛

in this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=233820 you’ll see that next version will have it fixed, untill then i’ll just wait.

  • Ok, gave it another try to update linux-lts…same result
light display manager failed to start see lightdm.service for details

I thought maybe something happened to grub so I booted to gui in linux
    and did

    # mkinitcpio -p linux-lts
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

rebooted with same result, just thought I’d try it.

    Also tried

    sudo downgrade linux-lts

would only let me select local packages, but none of the 3 I tried helped.

…ok so I caved in and reinstalled antergos

    first off, the new installer
on new installer, just putting the usb in doesn’t give you an auto menu anymore,
I had to use the boot menu selector, odd

idk why but it wouldn’t let me change from bootuefi partion fat32 to ext4
don’t know if this is a big deal or not, I really don’t know enough about why it was set like that, maybe something grub-customizer did on last install? I left it alone and continued.

third…, power standby & screen off is on by default on the live usb installer.
the screen off isn’t really a big deal, but power standby I guessing is why the first attempt failed to install.
    rebooted live usb
got antergos installed got to the menu and selected linux-lts, and it just gets stuck with a blinking cursor.

Rebooted again and just let it continued to load and my desktop and settings
under linux 4.16.6-1-ARCH according to conky

    So to recap,
new install, nvidia, but linux-lts no longer boots, only linux.

    EFI partition is always fat32.

That’s beyond my knowledge, i’ve never used systemd-boot, if that’s what you’re talking about.

  • Another linux-lts update today so I updated got the same result, just boots to cursor, but tty available

Is there anything else I can try like this to help?

  • ok, another update.

Update for Linux was ready yesterday, so went ahead and did it.

After reboot, Linux then acted as Linux-lts which booted to tty only.

Another 2 installs was too tired to contiue, but today thinking back @pro-w-zieger and video driver, I left the proprietary nvidia drivers unchecked, I believe it’s using noveau
at the moment but it now boots both Linux & Linux-lts to desktop. YAY!

However It’s left some questions and problems…
first - Does this mean there is a problem with proprietary Nvida drivers, as I can’t game now.
here soon I was going to install them to see what happens but need to read up on how to undo it easily.

    2nd - can’t run grub-customizer, it will not start
    https://forum.antergos.com/topic/9866/grub-customizer-not-running

So just an update on where I’m at if anyone has any suggestions.

  • ok, got some news.

After hrs of tinkering with no success and a dmesg that kept saying
    $DISPLAY not set

I had the live usb in my hand to reinstall, AGAIN just to get video back, then,
I remembered the laptop burning my legs and happened to see you guys discussing much the same nvidia issue here
    https://forum.antergos.com/topic/9844/system-suddenly-won-t-complete-boot/14

So, I made sure all nvidia was gone

    sudo pacman -S nvidia-installer

then removed it all to revert back to nouveau, which I couldn’t get just nouveau to work as I already tried this just to get nouveau to work

    nvidia-installer -n

I guess GeForce GT 730 works under this…Then did

    sudo pacman -S nvidia-340xx
    sudo nvidia-xconfig

    rebooted, woohoo desktop under Linux
    check wine program…dang, needed

    sudo pacman -S nvidia-340xx-utils

    wine program works!

Now reboot for Linux-lts, but first

    sudo pacman -S nvidia-340xx-lts

    reboot
    YESSS! Linux-lts

Faaaaa, grub-customizer still doesn’t work alt text
    https://forum.antergos.com/topic/9866/grub-customizer-not-running

So, does this mean antergos installer will have to start checking
closer for which proprietary driver to install?

Anyway, I guess this is solved, got Linux-lts back, wine game works,
just need to set Linux-lts as default
