• My video keeps freezing up randomly in any program

I am running Antergos and am having some trouble with video. When I am using Blender I noticed that sometimes the screen would stop updating and only the mouse cursor would move. This also happens in Deepin movie. I thought that this was just an issue with Blender at first but then I later realized that it also happens when using Dolphin Emulator and the video would go for seconds without a response. The music would still play in the background though so I could tell that it was not the programs fault. I am running Deepin on Intel HD Graphics 3000 and an i5 on my Lenovo X220 Tablet Laptop. This problem makes it impossible to video edit, animate, or watch movies or even play my emulators.

Also, I am not using the xf86-video-intel driver because it makes OBS (or any screen recorder) show up with glitchy video tearing and all sorts of crappy video artifacts. I screen record a lot. This package should also not be a problem because it wasn’t installed on Ubuntu and I had none of these problems.

    ;) :) ;P

  • Interesting… what a strange issue! Could your cache storage space be full perhaps, causing memory to build up and thus your work in Blender lagging. Would executing these commands to clean up some storage space on your PC help by any chance?

    sudo pacman -Scc (cleans cache)

sudo journalctl --vacuum-time=3d && sync (cleans journal)

sudo paccache -ruk0 (cleans built packages)

  • @keegan Thanks but this didn’t help. It still does the same thing to me. It randomly just freezes everything on the screen but the cursor. Of course, I can still hear the audio but the video is frozen. In games, this can make it completely unplayable when there are two to five seconds of nothing happening.

  • Hmmm… going to have to think about this for a bit. Be back soon!

  • @cadenmitchell what is the journal sayin?

keep a terminal open with: journalctl -f while using blender or deepin-video

or for a specific programm do:

    journalctl -f /usr/bin/deepin-video

  • journalctl -p 4 -xb -1

    ???

  • @judd When I did this I got the following output in my terminal:

    [[email protected] ~]$ journalctl -p 4 -xb -1

Also, @joekamprad, when I ran the command you gave me on Blender it did nothing. I’ll try to find the Dolphin Emulator executable file and debug it. The terminal gave me no errors though.

  • @joekamprad I ran the command for Dolphin Emulator too which has the problem very badly. How do I check/give you the data?

  • “command output” | curl -F [email protected] https://ptpb.pw/?u=1

will pastebin it and give url of it

  • Same here on my laptop with Intel and nvidia (bumblebee). It started after updates from week or two ago.

Running browser or media player with optirun (nvidia card) seems to be a temporary solution.

  • @luke_d Sadly I can’t do that. I don’t have a Nvidia GPU. I don’t even have a GPU. I only have a CPU (Intel i5 6300).

  • @cadenmitchell I know, I was referring to my particular example.

I hope someone could help us with this one.

  • @luke_d said in My video keeps freezing up randomly in any program:

    browser

on browser and rendering there is the fact that they fall back to software rendering in most cases, stopping them from do so by forcing to use hardware rendering can help a lot.

Same for some players, it can help to change sort of settings inside.

But to see if something went wrong systemside you can allways run journalctl -fin a terminal and try reproducing the issue. with player or browser, and take a look if journal gives some hint on what is going on.

  • @joekamprad Where is the journal file? I couldn’t find it!

  • @joekamprad How do I stop hardware rendering fallback from being enabled?

  • @cadenmitchell Still can’t edit! I meant software rendering mode fallback!

  • Which browser?

    journalctl -f is for lifeoutput…

journalctl --since "10 minutes ago"is also possible

you can get the file not directly it is a journaldb, you only can call it to output:

    journalctl > journal.txt will create a file for you…

  • @joekamprad I’ve seen you post a link to this in another post I made about the differences between Ubuntu graphics and Arch graphics. Someone mentioned that they should remove xf86-video-intel and xf86-video-vesa. I still have xf86-video-vesa installed. Should I remove that too? Could it help and is it safe?

  • Never mind what I said about the xf86-video-vesa driver removal! It wants to delete my whole system when I do that!!!

  • I saw this Manjaro forum post about it being a kernel issue. I downgraded my kernel with the Antergos Kernel Manager and it mostly fixed my problem. The hangs happen less now. I couldn’t find any problems with Blender but it did happen some in Dolphin Emulator. I had my resolution at 1080p on Dolphin though and Dolphin already has problems with high resolutions. I used xrandr -s 720x480 and it didn’t hang anymore. By the way I downgraded my kernel to 1.14.8-1 and my LTS to 1.9.78-1. On Blender, I was even able to have real-time responsive animation playback without the GPU hanging and only having control of the mouse. ;)
