I ran checkrestart. I suggested several services that could be restarted.
When I ran systemctl restart lightdm.service the display want black.

After hours of looking for a solution I and asking for any help someone can give me.

    All intel drivers are installed.
    I removed and reinstalled lightdm.

What I have found is that the keyboard still works.
I can ssh into the machine and run commands.
    lightdm is enable and running

I have tried different HDMI cables.

Worst indication however is that trying to boot a live ISO on USB stick also has no display. I have no way to understand what is happening.

So again if anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

    Thank you

  • Which ISOs have you tried? Maybe try sth like Ubuntu and see if it works.

You could also try to switch to another Display Manager like SDDM and see if it works.
:: Install and enable SDDM ::
    sudo pacman -S sddm
    sudo systemctl -f enable sddm

Whats your output of sudo systemctl status lightdm.service ?
Can you switch to another TTY if you get the black screen?
Any errors/ output etc. during the start?

  • @jackoch if you can login via ssh or TTY2 then please provide journal e.t.c.

You can use my handy script, it will pastebin it and giveout an url you can provide…

I tried Linux Mint 18.3 and Kali ISOs.

I would also try uninstalling redshift - many errors.

Did it work with SDDM? Again the black screen?

  • Removed redshift and xf86-video-intel
    Rebooted to black screen

sddm also boots to black screen

To be precise, when I say boots to black screen I mean that there is no information at all displayed during or after the boot process.

    Hi!

I know other people are already helping you, but:

    1. Are you sure you posted all updated packages? Your list seems too short, i believe you updated the kernel too.
    2. I’m very suspition about the new kernel, so do you have LTS kernel installed by any chance?
2.1) If so, could you try to boot it?
2.2) If not, can you install it? Access tty2 (Ctrl + Alt + F2), login and sudo pacman -S linux-lts linux-lts-headers, then update grub sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg and reboot choosing lts-kernel at grub screen.
    3. Do you have an old version of Antergos in an USB stick to boot? (not the new version)

  • I will try this tomorrow
I also intend to post this issue to Intel

I do not have the LTS kernel installed. I can install it by sshing into the machine. Is there a way to revise grub config to boot into it by default?

The problem is that there is absolutely no video during the boot. So I can cannot see the grub menu or now the sddm login.

Again this issue only arose when I restarted lightdm. Prior to that everything worked perfectly.

I do not have Antergos on a stick.

  • @jackoch @fernandomaroto yes current kernel is causing lots of problems, so giving LTS a chance would be a very good idea!

But if you also do not have the boot menu visible? there is no kernel or graphic driver loaded at this stage… Do you see system bootlogo at start? can you go into Bios/Firmware settings?

  • There is no bootlogo only black.

I held down the F2 key during boot to enter the Bios. It worked because I could not ssh into the machine. Unfortunately the screen remained black.

Going to Intel with this. Hoping the machine is not bricked.

Thank you all for the help.

  • Intel was able to solve the issue. It took a reset of the BIOS. No one seems to understand what actually happened.
