    Is this project dead?

    I am not the pro on this optimus stuff but as it looks like it is not realy needed anymore, and development is completely off the line?

  • @joekamprad Dunno if the project is dead or alive, but Bumblebee itself still works here. As soon as it stops, my Nvidia will become a piece of useless hardware which never turns on. Look at the graphics details when Pycharm runs with and without optirun:

  • The question is if there is a way to get both working without bumblebee.

    I just buy such notebook for my wife, and was investigate around solution to get it work for streaming e.t.c.

  • @joekamprad Disclaimer: this will be just my opinion, with no solid background.

    For many years I used to use Ubuntu on various machines, not caring much of graphics drivers, and it includes at least first year of use of my current laptop, equipped with optimus Intel + Nvidia combo. Ubuntu, at least those days, would let me use as well proprietary as open source Nvidia drivers, but none of them worked well. Since I’m not a gamer, I was just using Intel graphics, which was sufficient to edit documents, work with Android Studio, and sometimes watch a movie.

    First time I actually needed Nvidia was when I started working on a game on the JavaFX platform. Integrated Intel graphics was absolutely insufficient to run anything at all fluently. I started checking numerous Linux distributions. The only which allowed me to run Nvidia with proprietary drivers were Mint, and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Newer Ubuntu versions refused to install at all. In both cases the graphics performance was crappy. Also Manjaro, which was my daily driver those days, was unable to make Nvidia work in any configuration. The one and only distro which performed well was Antergos running Bumblebee, installed according to the Wiki guidance.

    If you want my advice:

    1. Either check if the laptop you’re about to buy includes optimus graphics, and do not buy if so,

    or

    1. check if you can install Antergos + Bumblebee on the machine before buying.

    I’d focus more on the 1st solution, if I were you.

  • You are completely right, it is the best to check before, to get secure that the device will fit your needs.
    BUT what if it is working now, but would not anymore in the future because bumblebee is not developed anymore?

    My question here is about finding a solution to keep it working, may also without bumblebee, as device on GitHub is talking about that it will be not needed anymore.
    I was wondering if someone know about what he want to say.

  • Some computer may need BIOS adjustments before Bumblebee installation.

  • I sure hope it’s still alive, I just got it working very nicely on my new laptop with a 1060 6GB in it. If theres another way to use optimus then I managed to miss it. Can’t wait to play with dxvk soon.

  • To make my Topic more clear, the talk is not about bumblebee will be away / not aviable anymore soon, but about that development is not been done anymore.

    And also about the question if this is the only solution to get this hybrid notebooks working nicely!

  • I found out that bumblebee has no vulkan support so I’ve been testing out this method https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvidia-xrun

    Performance is very good, but I have an issue where my xserver running gnome will die after a couple minutes of using the other one, and the only desktop environment I’ve found to work without issues for me with nvidia-xrun so far has been awesome. I’d prefer if gnome just kept working so I could switch between sessions depending on what I want to do. If gnome worked with nvidia-xrun I could tolerate it as I could just work from there, and I’m not skilled or patient enough to customise awesome into a comfortably workable environment.

  • Vulkan support is the main answer I received when asking a similar question in another forum. Like piotr above, Antergos was the only distro that I was able to get both Intel + Nvidia working, using optirun. My situation was very similar in that Mint worked but poorly and Manjaro never worked, despite many days of trying. The Antergos wiki on getting it to work was also the most detailed out of any I read and perhaps why the experience went much smoother.

    I hope it’s not dead as that’s not a headache I want to go through again.

    I know that now, at the time I did not, it was a brand new laptop (my first with hybrid graphics) and also my first foray into an Arch based distro. So, there was a bit of a learning curve for me.

    There was a ton of info out there for setting up bumblebee but the Antergos wiki was the most detailed and worked first try. I suppose I’m getting a bit off topic, though. Thanks for the reply.

    Bumblebee situation is a bit like those with Compiz. Compiz’ active development has been stopped around 2012, iirc. But Compiz is still alive, maintained, nicely works on all platforms.

    Bumblebee works in all distros. In Debian Lenny, Squeeze, Wheezy, Jessie, Stretch, Buster, Sid. In other words, in Debian oldstable, stable, testing, unstable. In Fedora, starting from F13 Goddard up to the curent F27. In openSUSE, starting from 11.3 Teal up to 42.1 Malachite, in modern Leap releases and rolling Tumbleweed. In Arch. In numerous derivatives of these major distros.

    These aren’t just words. This is the real software which worked and continues to work here with Bumblebee.

    Bumblebee works for many nVidia Optimus cards; they range from GTX 410M up to GTX 950M.

    It’s hard to immagine that Arch, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE will drop Bumblebee out of their repos, and will leave users of more than 100 Optimus cards without the only way, which allows to unveil the full nVidia Optimus potential.

    Bumblebee is alive.

    Where it is true for a number of systems that bumblebee is working perfectly, and also it is a tool to make use of software that is still developed like the drivers for nvidia and intel… my question was linking to what is about the newer “optimus” systems? as hardware today is not resiting more then 4 years? there will come the time… all of this hardware is gone for something newer faster.

  • Well I can confirm that bumblebee works for a GTX 1060 so probably the rest of the 10 series gpus. I guess if it suddenly stopped working in the next generation someone would hopefully be inspired to fix it.

    After many negative reports about Bumblebee on GTX 10nn, it sounds very promising.

    Could you be so kind to share the full output of three commands -

    1. If you have aur/inxi installed:

      optirun inxi -Gxzc0
      
    2. If you don’t have aur/inxi, then (don’t miss the final single apostrophe char):

      lspci -vnn | grep '\''[030[02]]'
      
    3. And finally
