These are two different errors, unrelated ont to another. I’ll talk about the 2nd error only:

shutdown[1]: Failed to wait for process: Protocol error

This message is repateated several times - usually from 4 to 6 - on shutdown.

This bug (Poettering prefers to call them “features”) was introduced by systemd 237. It affects all Arch-based distros. Other distros aren’t affected.

The bug demonstrates itself only in Arch because only Arch has the mkinitcpio-generate-shutdown-ramfs service. Other distros don’t have it.

The bug may be workarounded in four ways:

    • by temporarily masking mkinitcpio-generate-shutdown-ramfs.service

    • by using shutdown hook (ArchWiki says that shutdown hook is deprecated and shouldn’t be used)

    • by downgrading systemd to 236

    • by waiting for systemd upgrade, in a hope that the issue will be solved sooner or later

Apparently, the bug doesn’t harm Arch in any way, and may be safely ignored.

  • ignoring is the best workaround 😉 as you will forget about when it does not show up …
