• Unable to install in UEFI mode \[Solved\]

I have an Alienware m17x R4 with i7-3740QM, 16GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce GTX 680M and was trying to install Arch Linux on it. I have once installed Arch the “hard” way but did not feel like doing this again and so zeroed in on Antergos.

I used USBWriter to create a USB media from the 24 June 2014 ISO. Initially all I got was a blank screen when using the USB key.

Using "nomodeset"got USB Key to boot up part of the way. It gets stuck at the line ->
[[b:2v3lao4h]OK[/color:2v3lao4h][/b:2v3lao4h]] Reached target Graphical Interface.
After that the cursor just keeps blinking. Prior to this, about 8 lines up it says ->
[[b:2v3lao4h]FAILED[/color:2v3lao4h][/b:2v3lao4h]] Failed to start LiveMedia Config Script.
Using “systemd.unit=multi-user.target” got me to the CLI. There were no journals created so nothing to share from that. Running “systemctl status livecd” produces this ->
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/livecd.service; enabled)
Active: [b:2v3lao4h]failed [/color:2v3lao4h][/b:2v3lao4h](Result: exit-code) since Tue …
Process: 270 ExecStart=/etc/antergos/livecd [b:2v3lao4h](code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)[/color:2v3lao4h][/b:2v3lao4h]
Main PID: 270 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
I also tried running the ISO in Vmware Player in a VM configured to use UEFI to see if this was a hardware issue. I got the same error. Running the ISO in a VM with BIOS worked fine. So it seems to be something to do with UEFI boot.
I would like to know if I can do anything to fix this and get on with the installation.

• can you boot without UEFI?

when you get to the boot area in your bios does it give you a boot option without the UEFI?

on mine i have with and without i can’t boot with UEFI either.

• I have BIOS disabled and the firmware is set UEFI only. Secure Boot is off and Fast Boot is off.

I think that maybe it has something to do with the livecd config failure in UEFI mode.

• i would try to change the UEFI only option. check around your bios for some other related options.

also and this might not change anything but maybe worth a shot. try the suse imagewriter

ive always had good luck with that app.

you could be right with having something to do with the livecd config since it does boot in to gnome to install.

Hi,

The livecd failure message can be ignored. It registers as failure every time but it has not actually failed. The problem you are experiencing is definitely graphics driver related. See this post for instructions on saving the logs to a usb drive and then post them here: [http://forum.antergos.com/viewtopic.php?t=1877&p=8603#p8548][0]">viewtopic.php?t=1877&p=8603#p8548

Also you might try adding these options to the kernel boot command to try and force X to use the vesa driver so you can at least get to a GUI:

nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0 nvidia.modeset=0

: <a href=

• Using “nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0 nvidia.modeset=0” does not work, I still get the same problem.

Also I can use “systemd.unit=multi-user.target” to get to the CLI interface login. But when I try to save logs the only journal logs available are for "journalctl -b 1"corresponding to the immediate login session. None of the previous boot logs are available. Also xsession and xorg logs are empty.

The system hangs when using “nomodeset” to get a graphical session. How do I get to the logs for these failed boot sessions?

• Because its a live image everything is stored in RAM which gets dumped upon shutdown/reboot.Have you done a little “trial and error” with the various settings available in your UEFI/BIOS menus? Does it boot in legacy BIOS mode? Maybe this will help get it to GUI (add to kernel command) [code:1xo6ehhd]modprobe.blacklist=nouveau[/code:1xo6ehhd]

Cheers!

• Hi,
I have got similar problem.

I am trying to boot Live USB stick using UEFI (Legacy works like chamr). Boot menu starts, I choose Arch live image and black screen appears and thats all.

I have been allready trying to use nomodeset option but with no success.

Any idea? Thanks

EDIT: Don´t know excatly which one, but some of the previous release of antergos worked boot in UEFI. I think even RC worked.

EDIT2: I have got Lenovo Ideapad U330P (maybe it will help).

• I have Windows 8.1 installed in UEFI mode. I do not want to disturb this and cannot shift to Legacy BIOS mode. However on Vmware Player the livecd works in BIOS mode, but is keeps failing in UEFI mode there also.

Anyways, this time when I tried

nomodeset nvidia.modeset=0

I got a blinking cursor after “Reached Target Graphical Interface”. Using Ctrl-Alt-F1 I was able to go to a CLI interface and got some logs.

Journalctl didn’t have any logs, but I got the Xorg failure logs. I can’t attach the logs so am copy pasting some parts of Xorg.0.log.old below. Xorg.0.log is similar. It seems [guessing here] the system settles on using vesa drivers but is not able to initialise video memory, what to do for this now?

• What options are available in your UEFI system menu in regards to graphics? (Like choosing whether the discrete card is used, etc). You cant boot into graphical mode with any of the nomodeset parameters. They are used to get to console where on a normal installed system you could look at the previous journal logs to find the problem

1. Find out what options your system UEFI allows for graphics and try booting with each one of them. Don’t use any extra kernel parameters.
2. Try using only this kernel parameter: modprobe.blacklist=nouveau
3. Try using only this: modprobe.blacklist=i915
4. Try only: modprobe.blacklist=nouveau,i915
5. nouveau.blacklist=yes
6. i915.blacklist=yes
7. Try 5 & 6 together

Also try a prior ISO so we can determine if this is a kernel/graphics regression in the current version: [http://repo.antergos.info/iso/testing/antergos-2014.05.14RC-x86_64.iso][0]">[http://repo.antergos.info/iso/testing/a][1] … x86_64.iso

Cheers!

• The May ISO worked.

It boots into the live environment flawlessly.

I am writing this post from that environment itself

I expect I can install Antergos with this and then simply “pacman -Syu” and “yaourt -Syu” to be up to date.

• The RC ISO worked for me too.

I have got problems with automatic partitioning, but manual partitioning worked.

After Installing system and running pacman -Syu, system is stable and working flawesly.

• Thanks for letting me know. I will consult with the other devs to see what we can do about this in future releases.

Cheers!
