As i start try to mix up xfce with i3 as WM i find out this is quiet simple, and seem to be a goooood combination!

I will show later what i have done here 😉

This shows a standard xfce installation with antergos-i3-meta installed after first boot and replace the WM with i3… simple by stopping the prestarted once and remove xfce-desktop from autostart … adding i3 to autostart… simple!
    (Tested inside a virtualbox)

  • personal then you must fuse that xfce4-panel and i3 thing panel personal idea 🙂

  • @ringo32 yea it is only a first testing… at the moment everything is kind a doubled, as i have desktop environment alike settings for i3…

But my main idea is to have the good of both systems… the way i do changing WM is may also not the best, as removing the xfce-desktop is also removing functionality of panel, so ma it will need to change WM in another way or adding panel in another way is better.

Panel is nice to have a nice menu by hand, and may also to use addons from xfce, for me it is useless, as i mainly need configuration settings from xfce, as for gtk theming, audio, bluetooth, notification popups.
So that i can add buttons for this inside i3-blocks. like this:

  • If you cant wait, i simple replace stop XFCE (session settings) from strarting panel, xfcewm and xfcedesktop, and autostart i3 (put it to autostart apps in settings) for i 3 you can take my settings from github, but they are still complimenting to i3-gnome…

  • i3-xfce4-antergos

my settings to use 3 as a WM inside XFCE4 under Antergos Linux
will also work for pure Archlinux!

The benefit is to get i3 as environment for the best workflow, but have the ease of settings from xfce4!

I replace xfcewm with i3-wm, and have i3 configured to my needs.

I3 is set to have 4 tabs on bottom left:

    |Terminals| = 4 terminals with glances, journal, htop and one open for your input.

    |Files| = thunar open and up fpr action.

    |Email| = geary running.

    |Browser| = vivaldi running.

    tabs

Right bottom carry the info panel:
    with clickable icons for:

    • system-update, xfce-settings, volume, and poweroff-logout-menu
    • RSS-feed, systemmonitor, and tray icons

    right-panel

I just start up with the default XFCE-install from Antergos, and adding i3-wm packages from my list of packages:

cat packages.txt | xargs yaourt -S --needed --noconfirm

    i3-xfce4-joekamprad

Open ‘Session and Startup’, and go to the ‘Session’ tab.

Note: xfwm4 and xfdesktop processes will be replaced by the i3 Window Manager!

    • For xfwm4, click Immediately and change it to the Never option.

    • For xfdesktop, click Immediately and change it to the Never option.

    • For xfce4-panel, click Immediately and change it to the Never option.

    • Click the button: Save Session.

next you need to remove autosave option under Settings > Settingseditor:

    • klick on xfce-session: and remove the boolean for “save on exit”:
      settings-editor

    get i3 configs work:

    cp -R .config ~/.config && cp .Xresources ~/

    sudo systemctl restart lightdm

    and you are in!

Use arc-darker as theme and arc iconset.
