• boot into openbox login from antergos base install

as a part of learning experience I am trying to get OB working from a antergos base install. I have the wifi working and have installed openbox group, tint2, xorg etc. I looked for .xinitrc but not found so created one in home directory and manually entered “exec openbox-session” and saved it no quotes. On reboot only goes to prompt and after login. startx does not start the program. What am I doing wrong?

  • you will need to configure login and start x automatic at boot first… or use a dm (lightdm / sddm / nodm / gdm )

    how to add system logs:

  • I noticed file lightdm is already installed in /etc. I am unable to install lightdm.gtk.greeter stating already installed. there are no lightdm.conf and lightdm.service files…

  • to enable starting lightdm on boot:

    systemctl -f enable lightdm

    status:

    systemctl status lightdm

    lightdm.conf is under

    /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

    to made use of lightdm-gtk-greeter

you need to enable it by editing lightdm-conf:

    greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter

  • and i see this also on base install there are some lightdm files already existing… try find them:

    updatedb
    locate lightdm

    as root also

  • as far as i remember i do

    rm -R /etc/lightdm

but check first if installed or not pacman -Qs lightdm

  • @joekamprad there is no lightdm.conf under the directory /etc/lightdm, confirmed with find command. Get an error with systemctl -f enable lightdm. I am guessing the installation disk problem?, same usb stick install the gnome version without any problems…

will be giving up on this, thanks for helping.

  • @joekamprad seems to be a serious problem on the install, on sudo pacman -Qs lightdm there is no response at all. I followed your suggestion of reinstalling lightdm but now there is no lightdm systemctl…, will try to use another usb stick with fresh download of antergos to give another go. Thanks for all the help.

  • As far as I can see from my last install (I do base install and go with my packages.list) it looks like there is installed the folder /etc/lightdm but not lightdm itself, may to get Antergos theming work, but useless without lightdm installed before. And pacman is erroring the existing folder. So removing this folder ‘sudo rm -r /etc/lightdm’ and install lightdm after will work.

  • @joekamprad said in boot into openbox login from antergos base install:

your suggestion makes perfect sense. I installed lxdm and got it working. thanks for the input.

  • if you tried again can you make sure it is a fact?

    pacman -Qs lightdm

    and

    ls /etc/lightdm
