• Post Upgrade: Mounting/Unmounting USB causes X to restart and crashes.

Hello, I’m new to these forums, so I’m not sure if this is the right category for my problem.

My Thinkpad E550 was working fine on Sunday (1/21/18), and I was able to mount and unmount USB devices without issue. On Monday night I performed a full upgrade. The next day I needed to transfer some files from a USB, plugged it in and witnessed my screen flicker and the desktop reload as if X had restarted. Upon unmounting the USB, I was logged out of my session and all of my work was lost. I have tried multiple USB drives and all have the same outcome. Not knowing how to troubleshoot effectively, I looked at some other forum posts and have scrounged together some info. Below is a summary of my findings.

Here is the output of all packages installed by pacman since the issue appeared:

I was able to access and transfer files. If anyone has any suggestions or any advice for more useful information I can post, I’d be grateful.

  • Oh, I met the same situation with you, bro. Each time I plug or unplug my u disk or MTP phone, the gnome will logout automatically. Fortunately, I backup my machine everyday before I update my Arch Linux. I think we should post this problem to the forum of Arch Linux for more help.

  • It is happening to me too.

It seems to be a problem with gnome 3.26.2

  • hi,

Yes, thanks for your reply. For complement, the exact name of the extension is Places status indicator. The problem was gone after I switch off the button of Places status indicator.

Hope the problem of the extension will be solved soon. Thanks all of you.

  • Thank you valeriopaolo.delrossi! Disabling the places status indicator extension has fixed the issue for me. And thank you to everyone else for responding; I greatly appreciate it!

  • @valeriopaolo-delrossi Thank you for this solution!

  • @valeriopaolo-delrossi, It works.

    Thank you!
