• Desktop effects were restarted due to a graphics reset

anyone else facing this error on a system fully updated?

    Antergos KDE + Kubuntu 18.04 + Windows 10
    Motherboard Asus P8H67-M LE - CPU: Intel Core™ i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz - RAM 10 Gb

  • I have been experiencing desktop freezes under Plasma5 for quite a while, caused by a crashing compositor.

  • I understood what my problem is.
After searching around, I made a “dmesg” and extracted that:

[ 468.262706] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 6:0:0x87e8fffd, in kwin_x11 [517], reason: Hang on rcs0, action: reset

[ 468.262709] [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.
[ 468.262710] [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error

    [ 817.961473] i915 0000:00:02.0: Resetting chip after gpu hang

So, it’s problem of GPU hanging coming from a crash.
    I have internal Intel GPU.
I don’t know how to solve the problem.
    Any kind suggestion?

  • I get this error all the time when opening multiple Chrome tabs or just by opening Zoom.

I haven’t found any significant output from dmesg after the error happens:

The message ends right there with no other output.

I have tried everything I’ve found on Google, and there’s not much to begin with. I’m running everything up to the latest version, nvidia drivers are 390.42, GPU is a 1080 GTX, I use it on dual boot with Windows for gaming and have no issues there, so I don’t think some browser tabs should affect it.

Changed from OpenGL 2 to 3 and it didn’t have any effect, I’ve also played around with the composite and full composite modes but nothing has worked so far.

Any ideas would be very appreciated, I’m getting tired of having to log out of the system so many times a day.

  • Downgrade KWin. I currently use KWIn 5.10.0-3.
