• I am desperate, which DE is "made for me"?

    Guys.
As Plasma5 is getting worse and worse with the proprietary Nvidia drivers, I am quite desperate now, as I don’t know anymore wich DE to use.
What I want: A fully featured desktop environment with all bells and whistles like effects that runs stable on my hardware ( I7 7700, Nvidia GTX 1060)
What I don’t want: Anything GTK based.
    Ideas?
    J.

  • @Jeannie____
My choice is Xfce, because it is above all stable, and is also reasonable configurable. It has never failed me.
But it is GTK based. And it is light on resources, though that may not (currently) be of great importance for your machine.
But I am using it on all of my (several) machines, some of which are old and some quite new.

  • I don’t care about ressource usage, I have more than enough power in my machine.
What I care about is functionality and stability and the absence of GTK, which disqualifies xfce as de for me.

  • @Jeannie____

    …disqualifies…

    May I ask why?
And sorry, I misread your first post…

  • I have been through all kinds of issues with GTK3, broken themes, broken icons, white text on white input boxes in various applications, uberinconvenient and ultraugly client side decorations, constant changes every 6 months, so I consider GTK3 as completely unusable.

  • All I can think of is LXQT, if that helps :).

Keep trying, never give up. In the end, you will find that it was all worth it

  • That’s not feature complete and very buggy.

  • All I can say then is that Budgie is supposed to go QT soon, so perhaps that may be a future option?

That would be plasma, gnome, cinnamon or mate.

    plasma then.

Plasma5 is getting worse and worse

    Windows then. hehehe

Ok, seriously, i agree LXQT is not ready for everyday usage, I guess you’ll need to give in somewhere and pick one of them anyway.

I tried lumina some months ago, i found it very promissing but buggy anyway, you can check it.

    from wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qt_(software) :

Several GUIs and desktop environments utilize Qt as widget toolkit:

LXQt (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment), the successor to the GTK+-based LXDE, based on Qt
Lumina, a desktop environment designed for TrueOS[33]
Budgie, started porting to Qt, current main version still powered by Gtk+
    Yunit,[34] a community-based fork of the Unity8-Shell[35]
KDE Plasma, a desktop environment for various form factors like computers, tablets and smartphones[36]
Though based on Qt, has integration with GTK+ written programs and themes since version 4.2
Hawaii, a QtQuick and Wayland based desktop environment[37]
DDE (Deepin Desktop Environment) for Deepin[38][39]

    I hope it helps.

  • As I need a reliable machine that doesn’t freeze out of the blue (like my Plasma5 Desktop does a couple of times each day) I fear, my Linux days might indeed be over.
    Windows licenses are cheap nowadays.

Would kde4 suits your needs? I know there is an unofficial repo providing it…

  • I have no idea if it’s a good idea to use a dead desktop that I never liked.
But maybe it’s really time now to jump the linux ship, before wayland destroys it completely on the desktop.

I simply must disagree. I’ve used Xfce for a long time without problems. While Gtk3 is relatively new, and it has been introduced in Antergos quite slowly (which is good). Gtk2 is still in use in many places in Antergos Xfce, and Antergos Xfce has never failed me.

  • xfce 4.14 is not very far, and it will be using GTK3 exclusively.
Besides that, I do not consider xfce to be a fully fledged desktop.
    J.

  • @Jeannie____
    I disagree there, too. 🙂

  • A so called desktop environment that is not even able to offer a file manager with an integrated file search and uses a window manager that does not come with compositing enabled, resulting in massive screen tearing is nothing I am willing to use. If you add up the coming theming issues with GTK3, xfce is completely unusable, at least for me.
As a long time Gnome2/MATE user I have to admit that xfce always felt like Gnome 2.0.0 alpha for me.
I last tried xfce 4.12 which still is the current version.
But I fear we are heading massively into an off-topic discussion here.
    J.

  • @Jeannie____
Well, I think the role of a DE is not really that important. For me, much more important is what kind of, and how good, applications are available. Anyways, applications are the things we want/have to use, don’t you agree? 😉

And don’t be afraid of off-topic, you wanted to have a DE “for you”, and I’m just trying to find out the reasoning behind what you like for a DE (and explained here my reasoning).

I have used lots of DEs in the past, and originally I also disliked the looks and feel of Xfce. But as time has passed, I’ve learned about the many serious problems (for me) with other DEs, and that’s why I’m currently using it. And to make it clear, I’m no fanatic Xfce supporter, I’ll use it as long as it seems to be better than others for my purposes (as I have many machines, old and new). If I find something better (with all things considered), I can easily change to it.

  • XFCE and it’s applications look and feel primitive and outdated for me, so there is no way to convince me to even just try it again.
    J.

  • @Jeannie____
OK, of course it’s your choice. Anyways, I tried… 😉
It will be interesting to see what comes out of this thread as the DE of choice. 🙂

  • And what about Budgie? If you are abe to bear with KDE for just a little bit more, you can then switch to Budgie when they begin using QT.

Keep trying, never give up. In the end, you will find that it was all worth it
