• Bad RAM usage

Hi to all, I’m new to AntergOS and Arch in general.
I’m facing a strange behaviour with AntergOS and Gnome: the RAM usage is really bad but I don’t understand why.
Usually I have 5 or 6 GB occupied but in the system monitor I don’t see the cause because even summing of memory occupied by the processes listed I don’t reach 4 GB of RAM used.
This problem gets worse when I try to install a program with pamac: I was forced to create a swap partition even with 8 GB of RAM (I haven’t needed to create the swap partition for years) because otherwise I’ll facing system freeze with 100% of RAM occupied.

    Anyone has any ideas?

  • @Deook
Could you show something about your RAM usage? Like htop, glances, etc.
There are plenty of programs that can do that.

  • Seems that Firefox is using lots or RAM…
So what if you don’t start Firefox at all, how much RAM is used then?

  • Firefox uses a lot of RAM because I have 3 windows and 15 tabs but it’s not Firefox because closing it doens’t change the situation (maybe 6% less RAM).

  • @Deook
Closing does not necessarily release much memory because of caching, that’s just normal behavior.
Do you know how much Firefox is using RAM?

Firefox and java are using a lot of ram (Firefox old problem), you could try another browser just to confirm if this is the problem.
I use opera here and something around 15 tabs and never passed 2GB ram. And i’m running a lot of other stuff too. (i’m not counting cached)

  • It’s not Firefox, I use it since years and I never faced RAM problems. Moreover FF use a lot of virtual memory, but my problem is with physical memory.
I’m sure that the problem regard the installation/update package management .
In this screen I never used FF, I only tryed to install Thunderbird beta and what I see make not sense.0_1513930661900_Schermata da 2017-12-22 09-12-31.png

Something is occupiying my physical memory but it’s not listed and it’s causing me system freeze.

    EDIT:
You can also look at this:

    4.8 GB occupied by who?

  • I think (with the info you have provided) the only way to find the reason is to make a new install of Antergos and before installing any additional apps see if the problem exists. If not, then install your apps one by one, every time checking if the problem occurs.
Just as a guess, probably some AUR app causes the problem.

…or disable all autostarted applications and, if the problem disappears, start to enable them back again one by one.

The simple ps aux may be of some help too.

  • The strange is that the problem appear only when I use pamac.
There is another GUI for pacman that I can use?

  • Maybe add sorting to ps:

    ps aux --sort pmem

Yes, sure. Even Gtk-based DEs use Qt5 these days, so octopi, octopi-notifier, other octopi tools work perfectly within them, in place of pamac with pamac-notifier.

How to cleanly remove pamac from modern meta-packaged Antergos will be another problem though.

  • @manuel

When pamac is try to install something the memory usage has a big increase. Probably uses the RAM for storing everything without control the system status and after that leave the memory ocucupyied.
Without pamac the RAM usage seems normal (well, Gnome uses more RAM than normal but probably because with the installation script a lot of extensions being installed).

From that output, JetBrains and Firefox are large memory consumers.

So, installing what shows big memory usage?

Installing some AUR packages may use much memory, so you could install those packages e.g. with yaourt and measure memory consumption.

True but is correct: usually browser and IDE doesn’t cheap with RAM.
I don’t understand why memory don’t released after I close all the applications (the screen in the EDIT part). For istance, if now I try to close everything (and kill processes if nececessary) I have 2 GB occupied (is too much even for Gnome).

Moreover, talking with a collegue which is trying AntergOS Gnome for the first time I discovered that he’s facing the same problem. Is it possible that this is a malfunction introducted in a recent update and still not well known?

EDIT: disabling tmpfs helps a lot: if I try to install something the RAM usage doesn’t be affected.

  • @Deook
Yup, quite probable that tmpfs used for /tmp is the cause. You can disable or modify its usage. See

    man tmpfs

for info and ideas how to change it.
    EDIT: see also https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tmpfs

  • With

    df -h

    I found this:

    run 3,9G 2,2M 3,9G 1% /run
    /dev/sda6 170G 18G 151G 11% /
    tmpfs 3,9G 328M 3,6G 9% /dev/shm
    tmpfs 3,9G 0 3,9G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
    /dev/sda1 256M 92M 165M 36% /boot/efi
    tmpfs 791M 16K 791M 1% /run/user/120
    tmpfs 791M 7,0M 784M 1% /run/user/1000
    //spring/jform  459G   42G    417G  10% /opt/form/jForm

    Now always make sense.
    I used

    systemctl mask tmp.mount

I thought I had disabled it but instead it seems to not.

  • BUT

    *Disable automatic mount
Under systemd, /tmp is automatically mounted as a tmpfs even though no entry is specified in /etc/fstab.

To disable the automatic mount, run:

    sudo systemctl mask tmp.mount

Files will no longer be stored in a tmpfs, but on the block device instead. The /tmp contents will now be preserved between reboots, which might not be the desired behavior. To regain the previous behavior and clean the /tmp folder automatically when restarting, consider using tmpfiles.d(5):*

    sudo nano /etc/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf

    # see tmpfiles.d(5)
    # always enable /tmp folder cleaning
    D! /tmp 1777 root root 0

    # remove files in /var/tmp older than 10 days
    D /var/tmp 1777 root root 10d

    # namespace mountpoints (PrivateTmp=yes) are excluded from removal
    x /tmp/systemd-private-*
    x /var/tmp/systemd-private-*
    X /tmp/systemd-private-*/tmp
    X /var/tmp/systemd-private-*/tmp
