• Update breaks Cheese

    Hi guys,

Just did the latest update (after backup) and something on it is breaking Cheese. I use it for viewing my CCTV camera & it was working fine but now it goes unresponsive at 1st then says no device found. Any idea which of these is the culprit?

I am connected via USB so wonder if it is the usbutils?

  • @joekamprad Dont know if you have Nvidia but that is what was causing my problem. I installed all the updates except Nvidia 387.34-5 plus utils 34-1 and all works now.

  • Correction - it worked until i rebooted my pc & it broke again 🙄

  • nvidia too here…

  • @joekamprad Well I can tell you what it is NOT. It not … Nvidia, Wine or usbutils. What it is that breaks Cheese is a real issue for me as it is broken on a fresh install too.

  • i do not find a solution here too… and yes it is only cheese with that problem… i do not find similar problems at the net also…

  • @joekamprad Not only Cheese it seems. On the fresh install VLC wont work either.

  • vlc is working here too:
    0_1512113912038_Bildschirmfoto vom 2017-12-01 08-38-20.png

  • Probably some dependency of cheese package is failing. I’d guess gtk3, but note that this is just a guess.

  • Did anyone here get Cheese working with the latest updates in Antergos? I just tried it recently, and it is still busted unfortunately.

  • As they are no issues around cheese on archforum, it can be that there is some issue with deps ?

  • Hey everyone. I just notices this too. “Device not found” error. I don’t use Cheese at all but just when I need to, it’s not working…

  • yes still the same, but there is wxcam and guvcview

  • this is a permissions issue… if i do

    sudo cheese

    in terminal, it works.
next step is add my user do video user group (probably)

  • in VLC the camera works.

    sudo usermod -a -G video $USER

    and re-login does not work

    ls -l /dev/v4l/

    gives the result:

    crw-rw----+ 1 root video 81, 0 abr 15 01:26 /dev/video0

but here i don’t know what permissions i should have

  • looks that pipewire is messing with xorg…

    sudo systemctl --global disable pipewire.socket

    solves the problem to me!

  • @quimkaos said in Update breaks Cheese:

    ls -l /dev/v4l/

    you mean:

    ls -l /dev/video0

here cheese is also getting no device when i open as root…

  • yes, video0

in my case, disabling pipewire fixed the issue in 2 laptops, gladly
