• Nvidia or AMD ?

Hi . Currently planning to install Antergos.
I have an nvidia GTX 770 and an AMD R9 290/390.
(reason is i was looking at pci passthrough in past)

What do you recommend I use ? Nvidia with the closed driver blob or AMD with the open source drivers ?
What works best from your experience ?

Well performance wise , based on GPU benchmark , AMD R9 is better than nvidia 770
Not sure how many headaches I can expect though.

34-Way Graphics Card Comparison On Ubuntu 17.10

In some games the AMD R9 290 will be on par or even faster than a GeForce GTX 780 Ti. And in other games it can be slower than a GTX 770. I think the AMD R9 290 will be the fastest in general. The AMD card will give the best experience because it will work out-of-the-box. Newer Mesa (the open-source AMD graphics driver) versions usually give more performance.

  • I switched from a Radeon HD to a GTX 1050 ti and I couldn’t be happier with the performance or the compatibility. Using proprietary drivers.

Already went with the Radeon R9 290/390.
    So far so good.
The nvidia is on the shelf as a backup.
Maybe will buy a 1050 next year.

Will probably also mark this as solved.

No problem there and you do not have to feel bad about that, not at all!
