• \[SOLVED\] Mixxx program does not load

    Hello,

The one problem I have so far in Antergos 2014.05 (KDE) is that the DJ mixing program, Mixxx, does not load. Nothing happens when I try to load the program. The program does not even attempt to load. Can someone please assist in tracking down the problem. I have tried deleting and re-installing with no results.

I want to commend the developers and supporters for a positive distribution as far as my limited experience has revealed so far. Most things seem to run smoother on this distribution than others I have tried recently. I hope this one aspect can be fixed.

  • Hi,

I’ve installed mixxx and runs ok here (I’m using Openbox, though).

Could you start it in a terminal and post here the output?

  • Hello karasu,

Starting the program from the terminal does allow the program to run and function properly. Thank you. However, that seems to be the only way to start the program. Is there a way to cause it to start through the GUI? At this point it still will not. The output follows. Please forgive me if I post the code incorrectly. First time doing this.

  • Hi again,

The only difference I see is that if you call it from the GUI, it also calls pasuspender.

So, could you run from the terminal:

    pasuspender mixxx

To see if this makes any difference in your system? (in mine works ok).

  • Hello karasu,

Trying to run the program from the terminal with the command [i:1cbnemy1]pasuspender mixxx[/i:1cbnemy1] did not work. I suspected then that if the program did work using the [i:1cbnemy1]mixxx[/i:1cbnemy1] command with the terminal but did not work with the [i:1cbnemy1]pasuspender mixxx[/i:1cbnemy1] command then something must be wrong with the launch command in the GUI.

One of the things I dislike about other distributions is their dependence on pulseaudio. Antergos does not seem to have this and relies on ALSA alone, at least in the KDE environment. Therefore, I went to the menu editor in the start menu and looked for the start command for mixxx. Sure enough, the command was [i:1cbnemy1]pasuspender mixxx[/i:1cbnemy1]. So I changed the start command to just [i:1cbnemy1]mixxx[/i:1cbnemy1] and I now can start mixxx from the GUI or terminal.

The actual steps I took were:
    1. Right-click on the Antergos start button
    2. Select "Menu Editor"
    3. Select “Multimedia” and then select "Mixxx"
    4. Within the “General” tab there is a “Command:” text entry box which reads [i:1cbnemy1]pasuspender mixxx[/i:1cbnemy1] which the mixxx developers programmed into the start sequence. I edited the text entry to just read [i:1cbnemy1]mixxx[/i:1cbnemy1] (just delete "pasuspender ").
    5. Select “Save”

The mixxx program will now start through the GUI or the terminal. Thank you very much for helping me troubleshoot this issue. It highlights a unique issue between KDE and the mixxx program when not using pulseaudio. It also shows that the issue was with the mixxx program’s start instructions, not Antergos. Finally, but certainly not least of all, it shows how helpful, patient and courteous you and the Antergos community is with users from varying desktop preferences and varying user experience levels.

Antergos is working great for me so far and I am amazed at how many functions work better than in other distributions. You and the other developers have done a tremendous job in not only making the entry to “The Arch Way” easier but you seem to have improved on the general GNU/Linux experience. I highly recommend users try this fine distribution.

Again, thank you. I have annotated this item as [SOLVED].

  • Hi,

Big thanks for your kind words. Glad you solved it (and understood what was happening).

    Glad I could help.

    Cheers!
