• VLC System Tray Icon

    Hey guys,

Does anyone know how I can change the system tray icon for VLC?

    This icon here:

  • Other then change the ico file yourself I am not sure. I have not used KDE in years. KDE might have some sort of extension that covers top icons.
    VLCicon

  • That is exactly what I am asking.

How to change the icon. I don’t think KDE has anything that can do that.

I changed the icon within that folder shown, and nothing changed. (and rebooted even)

So it must be somewhere else…?

  • Install a custom icon theme for KDE? There is a chance the icon is stored inside the executable itself. I would assume tray icons are set by the desktop icon theme.

  • Yea I don’t want to have to use a specific theme to have that icon.

I am using a good icon theme that does change many of them, but VLC is not one.

Hoping someone knows where the icon can be changed manually.

  • KDE stores the default icons for the taskbar in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/ under various sizes. I would backup then edit an icon to see if changes take effect.

  • Thanks for the help.

Sadly I was not able to find VLC anywhere in that folder (i tried 512x512, scalable and 48x48).

I was able to find it within my icon theme “Papirus-Adapta-Nokto” but not sure if that’s actually for the system tray icons or not.

  • /usr/share/icons/“name-of-the-theme”/48x48/apps/vlc.png

  • That does not work.

My theme has all .svg files. So what I did was remove the SVG VLC file, replaced it with my vlc.png file. Didn’t do anything. Well, I closed VLC and opened it again, unless it works on reboot or something.

I don’t have a real SVG version of the icon I want to use either.

  • @noobertroon can you convert png top svg format? then replace the old svg by the new one (rename the new according to the old). Maybe you can try to find a svg version of vlc icon too…

  • I have the SVG version now

To be clear I am trying to change it to a white monochromatic icon. I don’t need their default icon.

Replaced it in that one Icon folder but it didn’t work. Wouldn’t I have to change each size folder within the icon folder. That makes no sense. Those seem to just be the icons for the icon set. Nothing to do with the system tray.

I tried edited the vlc.desktop but that also did nothing.

    :( sad

  • The main problem here is that the tray icon is hardcoded in the player , vlc doesnt use an icon.

  • That bug report is from what 2010/2013 and says it’s fixed?

I guess the only way to fix it is to stop using the system tray icon and just minimize to the task-bar. I’d rather use the system tray to save space but hmmm…

  • then ;) recompile the qt-module :)
    MainInterface::createSystray() function in modules/gui/qt4/main_interface.cpp.

  • You are going to have to explain that one.

    What/how/where?

Sounds like a lot of work and something you shouldn’t be playing with?

  • I was joking !!!
