• New Cnchi screen: Mirrors

    Hi all,

We’ve been working in a new screen in Cnchi to help with mirrors problems.

    More info here: https://karasu.github.io/mirrors-screen/

    Cheers!

  • Thank you! That is such a useful addition to Cnchi:grinning:. Could you put out a new release of Cnchi though? Sometimes new changes like this don’t seem to show up just by waiting for it to update (thinking of when you added the help me page for dual booting ;)).

    Thanks!

Keep trying, never give up. In the end, you will find that it was all worth it

  • And honestly, I don’t think your design looks too bad either:slight_smile:. (referring to your comment in the link ;)).

We’re really cautious when updating cnchi…
This code still hasn’t been merged with 0.14 branch, so it will take a while until this reaches “production”.

    Cheers!

  • Looks great to me!

  • @karasu very nice!
Let me take the oprtunity to ask you something:
When new users get that “metalink errors” running cnchi is that related with nonupdated or updating mirrors? If so is there a way for the installer check this and then skip those mirrors?

Antergos (default OS) - WIN10 (abandoned)
    I3wm - Mate desktop
    AMD - A4 7300 Radeon graphics
    16 GB ram

    Linux newbie since 06/2016

  • Hi,

“metalink” errors can be for many reasons:

    1. Package has been renamed, so Cnchi is searching for a non existent package --> fail!
    2. Databases show version X, but in mirror there is version Y. This is mainly because of a not updated mirror. --> fail!
    3. Cnchi has tried to download from different mirrors and failed to retrieve the package. This can be due to a faulty connection, mirrors that are not responding, you’ve installed in the middle of a mirror update, … --> fail!

Cnchi needs to update databases before starting downloading packages. That’s why it needs a mirror working and updated.

With this screen advanced users will be able to discard mirrors that are not updated as fast as they should, or because for some unknown reason they cannot download from that mirror (like the Ukraine issue we got days ago).

We will have to bear with 1) and 2).

For 1) Cnchi gets its packages list online, so it’s quick to modify it when we detect such errors.
For 2) only advanced users will really know which mirrors work for them and which do not.

    Cheers!
