• xboard bug (with gnuchess)

Since a week I have a problem with xboard.

The machine engine (gnuchess) just play one move and then doesn’t do anything.

(Reinstalling xboard or removing other chess programs (knights, pychess, gnome-chess) didn’t help.)

    I really don’t have any idea…

    Some details:

    1. I noticed that the start (the message “Starting chess programm”) takes more time than usual (about 10 seconds)
    2. If I try to start a new game I got:
xboard: Error writing to first chess program: Broken pipe
xboard: Error writing to first chess program: Broken pipe
xboard: Error writing to first chess program: Broken pipe
xboard: Error writing to first chess program: Broken pipe

(as you see four times the same message)

  • Seems like there is a problem between gnuchess interface and xboard. You should contact the developers or xboard package mantainer in arch repos (might be a version mismatch btw gnuchess vs xboard). I dont think this is an issue for antergos.

gnuchess itself seems to behave ok.

  • So, you have the same problem with xboard?

Yes, xboard on my system behaves as you described.

    Ok, thanks.

Well, I have the last version of xboard (4.9.1), last updated: 2017-04-24
    https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort=&q=xboard&maintainer=&flagged=

But I definitely didn’t have this bug so long (April) ; as I said it’s just about a week old…

EDIT: I just noticed that the last update of gnuchess was on 2017-08-06. Maybe this version doesn’t communicate properly with xboard?

  • @psscnp142
Well, after downgrading gnuchess xboard works fine (as usual):

    sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gnuchess-6.2.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

    Certainly just a temporary solution.

  • Nice to hear!

As I said, the issue is probably related to version mismatch between gnuchess and xboard. Arch repos have gnuchess-6.2.5 and xboard-4.9.1. They are the same as the latest versions provided by the projects.

So, either gnuchess changed its interface or xboard development fell behind of gnuchess development.
