• VMWare Player installation.

    Hola Guys,

I am using Antergos on my Macbook Pro.
Would like to try out VMWare in this machine.
I have installed it and ran the player.
Its asking for the Kernel Header location and I am stuck now.

I have checked forums and tried some things but no luck. Cant find anything matching to my situation.
Am getting message to use Kernel Headers 4.10.13-1-ARCH.

    Any suggestions?

  • @surfermj
    Hi friend!

    Did you install linux-headers yet?
and if you use LTS kernell you can install the other header too:
    sudo pacman -S linux-headers linux-lts-headers

    I guess that’s what’s missing for you!

  • @fernandomaroto Thanks Bro. Did that now.
How to give the location to VMWare now. Just accessed the prgrm and its still asking for the Kernel header

  • @surfermj
I don’t know because i don’t use VMWare, i use virtualbox here, sorry. I thought it would just start working for you.

  • @fernandomaroto Cools. Thanks anyway

  • @fernandomaroto Hows Virtualbox working for you.
I require Adobe products to work so thats y I am looking to virtualize.

  • @surfermj Virtualbox works totally fine for needs here, i recommend you to use.
To use Adobe products do you need windows? i have win xp (the posready edition), win 7 and win 10, all working fine

  • @fernandomaroto Could you suggest a guide to install virtualbox. I just tried and after installing it doesnt launch for me :(

  • @surfermj
    install:

    sudo pacman -S virtualbox virtualbox-ext-vnc virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-iso virtualbox-guest-modules-arch virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-host-dkms

    after install run:
    modprobe vboxdrv

Then see if will launch properly

This tutorial is very good in case you need https://forum.antergos.com/topic/1102/how-to-install-virtualbox-in-antergos-tutorial/2

  • @fernandomaroto I tried that guide earlier.

By using your command at first I got 'virtualbox-guest-modules-arch and virtualbox-guest-dkms are in conflict’
So removed one version and installed.

    Then got this:
    (1/6) Install DKMS modules
==> No kernel 4.9.37-1-lts modules. You must install them to use DKMS!
    ==> dkms install vboxguest/5.1.22_OSE -k 4.11.9-1-ARCH
    ==> dkms install vboxhost/5.1.22_OSE -k 4.11.9-1-ARCH

Also I get stuck always while doing modprobe.

modprobe: FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found in directory /lib/modules/4.10.13-1-ARCH

    sudo pacman -S linux-headers linux-lts-headers

    modprobe vboxdrv

I removed one package from the install list, please retry the commands to see if i’m not mistaken

These I installed earlier for VMware

i’ts my fault, i don’t have both of them installed, but i changed using one to another some time ago. You can just install virtualbox-guest-dkms if the other packages were installed properly

  • But still shows error here

  • @surfermj Do you use LTS kernel? If not i’m guessing you must uninstall linux-lts-headersin case you installed
I never had this problem here…

  • @fernandomaroto I installed both linux-headers and linux-lts-headers

  • @surfermj
I guess it’s my fault since english is not my native language.

    please uninstall lts-headers with:

    sudo pacman -R linux-lts-header

    then do this:
    sudo pacman -S virtualbox virtualbox-ext-vnc virtualbox-guest-iso virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-host-dkms

    then do this:
    modprobe vboxdrv

    then try to launch virtualbox

  • @fernandomaroto It was not ur fault. I already had both of them installed.
Removed lts and now installation went fine I guess.

Modprobe is still showing the same error

  • @surfermj
ok, when you try to launch virtualbox do you get any error?

  • No nothing.

Finally managed to run modprobe and it didnt threw an error this time.
Did a reboot and got message vb service not running and it wil exit now. Tried clicking on vb and no response like before.
Getting the error is a progress I would say :D
