• An "Hello, World!" from Canada!

    Hello, World!

First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone who works closely or remotely on Antergos for such a nice and beautiful distribution. Antergos is exactly what I was looking for.

I’m from Canada, more precisely from Quebec City. This mean I live in a french community. My English is not very good and I want to improve it the most I can. My username “iSpeakVeryWell” is kind of a joke.

I’m a new linux user since approximately one month. I struggled for many years to find a distro that suit me well and I’m very glad that I did finally find one! I hope Antergos will be my home for a long time. At this point, my HTPC and my main PC are both on Antergos. The next step is to build a custom router using pfSense with my third PC who are unused since forever.

I’m a developer officially since 2007, but I’ve been in contact with computers since way much more longer than that. Right now, I consider that I’m efficient mainly with those technologies : C#/VB.Net, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript. I’m able to do frontend tasks as well as backend tasks. I like to do both equally. I’m almost sure I would not be good with lower level language like C++, C, Assembly, etc.

Right now, I would like to improve my JavaScript knowledge and became a JS master. I have a lot of interest in the following technologies : Node.js, Electron, NoSQL databases like MongoDB and SASS. I would like to be more on the bleeding edge and less axed on Microsoft technologies.

I also want to became a Linux power user, but I know I have a long way to go before I earn this achievement. I’m fully motivated to use Antergos so I think it’s going to help me to attain my goal very quickly! :)

My first mission will be to find a way to have those three things to works together : lightdm, gnome-screensaver and light-locker. Right now I struggle, but I’m confident that I will find a way to overcome that challenge.

My second mission would concern Antergos installation with my GTX 970, but that’s quite a very long post! :P I gonna stop it here!

Feel free to contact me if you feel I can contribute and be useful at any task.

    Cheers

  • @iSpeakVeryWell , thanks a lot for your kind words and I do hope you fit somewhere to contribute.
    Welcome to Antergos!

Those are my main interests at this very moment!

I’m having difficulties to enjoy programing in Javascript, to be honest. But it seems that it’s becoming the future in client/desktop apps.

If you are willing to learn electron, I would be more than glad to welcome you to help us in Antergos development (and don’t be afraid, I’ve just started learning it myself a few days ago).

    Oh, and welcome to Antergos.

    Cheers!

I already did find answers to my “missions” in this forum and elsewhere! Those were great and accurate answers! :) I just want to go deeper, especially with the screensaver. I don’t want to switch to gdm, I really want lightdm to work properly. I also feel like I did break something by experimenting with the OS. I’m pretty sure I gonna find my way! :)

  • @iSpeakVeryWell Thanks for the detailed introduction  . It’s nice to read such things. I want to welcome you too here, and even give you a piece of good advice! Be warned, that in every situations there are bad guys. And the bad guys here are @anarch, @karasu and @joekamprad. Let me tell you why:

@anarch She’s a very dangerous woman that makes you feel right at home. But when you least expect it, she will stab you in the back with a USB stick, which is made from hardened feta cheese in Greece, and run away with your freshly installed stable Antergos system. Also don’t believe it when she says she’s actually a he!

@karasu One to be very careful of! Has the developer status, but he’s actually a virus developer working for the Russian Anti-Quebecan hacking group called NSB, which is short for Not Situated in Barcelona. They don’t like Quebecans at all and will hack their computer at the first possible chance and put a lot of illegal kitty pics and vids on their system and report it to Interpol, which will get you arrested and eventually delivered to the USA to get a free 4 star hotel stay in Guantanamo Bay.

@joekamprad The worst criminal around here, even the worst possible in the world! He’s actually helpful by providing solutions for your problems here at our humble forums, but when you ask him to make you a sandwich, he will refuse! This person deserves to be locked up for life and never see the daylight again!

The rest of us are quite nice, so hang around will ya and give me free st00f pl0x!

  • I may be scared. Joe has helped me and has made me hungry. I’m new to Linux - about 2 weeks. I am really wanting to get Gnome DE installed on old 2008 MacBook Pro (new for me). From the little I know about GNU/Linux, I do want to stick it out with Antergos. Great community and what it brings is to my taste. Thx

You can’t simples ask,“make me a sandwich” and expect to receive one, but you must use “sudo make me a sandwich” that will do the trick

    Lieeessss

Btw, aside from all the lies and conspiracies going on in this thread, check out http://freecodecamp.com to learn Javascript related development (mostly focussed on web development). Wonderful source that I’ve been using to refresh my skillz.

  • @EarthMind thank you for the suggestion. Those kind of site don’t appeal me that much. I’m more on the self-educated side. I prefer buy a good book and read it cover to cover. I also target intermediate to advanced/expert level stuff. I feel like this site don’t have that much to bring to me unless I misunderstood it’s purpose.

But I really appreciate the suggestion! Thank you for it I know it came from a good intention.

Right now I plan to buy and read those book in the next year:

If you have good book to suggest, don’t hesitate!
