• Gnome Shell: How to disable Cinnamon updates?

    Hi all,

I run Gnome Shell (GS) and have noticed some Cinnamon updates coming through (eg cinnamon-desktop).

Is there anyway of disabling any non GS DE updates, even remove them entirely from the system? Or are these required as part of an Antergos install even though a user may never use them?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi:slight_smile:
I know that these are not required for Antergos, but am confused as to why Cinnamon updates are showing up on your system. Did you have the Cinnamon desktop installed on your system at one time?

    Hope I can help!

Keep trying, never give up. In the end, you will find that it was all worth it

  • Yes, as part of a Linux Mint install, but the disk has been formatted since then. I had Ubuntu GS 17.04 between LM and Antergos.

I have only ever used GS under Antergos.

  • @fotonut-nz I don’t understand your post.

Anyway, none of Cinnamon packages is installed in Antergos Gnome. How to demonstrate it? Start Antergos Gnome, and then:

    1. Find all packages in cinnamon group:
      ┌──[just]@[alexasg]:~$
      └─> pacman -Sg cinnamon
      cinnamon cinnamon
      cinnamon cinnamon-control-center
      cinnamon cinnamon-desktop
      cinnamon cinnamon-menus
      cinnamon cinnamon-screensaver
      cinnamon cinnamon-session
      cinnamon cinnamon-settings-daemon
      cinnamon cinnamon-translations
      cinnamon cjs
      cinnamon iso-flag-png
      cinnamon muffin
      cinnamon nemo
      cinnamon nemo-audio-tab
      cinnamon nemo-dropbox
      cinnamon nemo-emblems
      cinnamon nemo-fileroller
      cinnamon nemo-preview
      cinnamon nemo-python
      cinnamon nemo-seahorse
      cinnamon nemo-share
      cinnamon nemo-terminal
      ┌──[just]@[alexasg]:~$
      └─>

    2. Remove the group’s name (cinnamon) from the output:
      ┌──[just]@[alexasg]:~$
      └─> pacman -Sg cinnamon | cut -c10-
      cinnamon
      cinnamon-control-center
      cinnamon-desktop
      cinnamon-menus
      cinnamon-screensaver
      cinnamon-session
      cinnamon-settings-daemon
      cinnamon-translations
      cjs
      iso-flag-png
      muffin
      nemo
      nemo-audio-tab
      nemo-dropbox
      nemo-emblems
      nemo-fileroller
      nemo-preview
      nemo-python
      nemo-seahorse
      nemo-share
      nemo-terminal
      ┌──[just]@[alexasg]:~$
      └─>

    3. For each cinnamon’s package check whether it is installed or not:
      ┌──[just]@[alexasg]:~$
      └─> pacman -Q $(pacman -Sg cinnamon | cut -c10-)
error: package 'cinnamon' was not found
error: package 'cinnamon-control-center' was not found
error: package 'cinnamon-desktop' was not found
error: package 'cinnamon-menus' was not found
error: package 'cinnamon-screensaver' was not found
error: package 'cinnamon-session' was not found
error: package 'cinnamon-settings-daemon' was not found
error: package 'cinnamon-translations' was not found
error: package 'cjs' was not found
error: package 'iso-flag-png' was not found
error: package 'muffin' was not found
error: package 'nemo' was not found
error: package 'nemo-audio-tab' was not found
error: package 'nemo-dropbox' was not found
error: package 'nemo-emblems' was not found
error: package 'nemo-fileroller' was not found
error: package 'nemo-preview' was not found
error: package 'nemo-python' was not found
error: package 'nemo-seahorse' was not found
error: package 'nemo-share' was not found
error: package 'nemo-terminal' was not found
      ┌──[just]@[alexasg]:~$
      └─>

The error: means that the package is not installed. None of them.

    Edit

If, for any reason, you do have some of them, just put them in IgnorePkg = line in the /etc/pacman.conf file.

  • @just Thanks for that, I removed the offending packages…

Though I still don’t know how they got there in the first place…
