• KDE - Hangs at Spash Screen

I keep having a problem with KDE hanging at the splash screen (after lightdm login but before KDE desktop shows). If I wait a few minutes the desktop eventually goes black and I have a KDE style mouse cursor. Left or Right clicking does nothing. If I keep waiting, I get a dialog box to retry KDE Wallet - I can enter my GPG passphrase and WiFi connection happens but never get a desktop.

To fix it I just have to delete my “~/.kde4” directory. However, it’s getting annoying to have to keep recreating my desktop configuration. It’s happened at least twice in the past 2 weeks.

I’m not even updating KDE packages to trigger this. For example, I ran pacman here and after reboot I was hung at splash screen:

[2014-04-28 16:43] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -Syu'
[2014-04-28 16:43] [PACMAN] synchronizing package lists
[2014-04-28 16:43] [PACMAN] starting full system upgrade
    [2014-04-28 20:48] [PACMAN] removed shared-color-profiles (0.1.5-1)
    [2014-04-28 20:48] [PACMAN] upgraded colord (1.0.6-1 -\> 1.2.0-1)
    [2014-04-28 20:48] [PACMAN] upgraded cronie (1.4.11-1 -\> 1.4.11-2)
    [2014-04-28 20:48] [PACMAN] upgraded elfutils (0.158-1 -\> 0.158-2)
    [2014-04-28 20:48] [PACMAN] upgraded gtk3 (3.12.1-1 -\> 3.12.1-2)

I know GTK3 is causing issues with other desktops like Cinnamon… but can it cause issues like this with KDE?

My xsessions-errors log looks clean (no lines with EE status). As far as I can tell KDE does not do logging during startup. I’m not sure how to troubleshoot this next time it happens. I can easily recreating by putting a backup copy of “.kde4” back.

I’m not even tweaking my desktop that much. This is about all I’m doing at this point:

    1. Change Plasma Desktop Shell to Layout to “Folder”.
    2. Select a different background image.
    3. Pick a darker theme color - Obsidian Coast.
    4. Force font DPI to 96.
    5. Sometimes I add the Instant Messenger Contact Widget to the desktop.
    6. Sometimes I add a symlink for conky to .kde4/Autostart

This has happened without 4 & 5 as well, doesn’t seem to matter.

  • Hi,

Post the following logs after you experience the hang:

    [list:10prs1yb][*:10prs1yb]~/.xsession-errors[/*:m:10prs1yb][/list:u:10prs1yb]
    [list:10prs1yb][*:10prs1yb]/var/log/Xorg.0.log[/*:m:10prs1yb][/list:u:10prs1yb]
    [list:10prs1yb][*:10prs1yb]sudo journalctl -b > ~/journal.log (journal.log file will be in your /home after running command)[/*:m:10prs1yb][/list:u:10prs1yb]

    Best Regards,
