  • reinstalling software is not going to solve the problem that your having.
In case your’re not aware a segmentation fault is when some program is attempting to access a memory location somewhere which it is not normally allowed to access. And that’s why you have this abnormal program termination.

    can you try this:

    1. uninstall steam. I know, you already uninstalled it but did you also remove the hidden files for steam?
    2. remove home/michaeljuan/.local/share/Steam
    3. reinstall steam.
    4. you might also need to remove your games. I know, it sucks, because you might have to reinstall the again.
    5. check config/config.vdf. It may or may not be there. If it is, remove it, or move to a different location. It’s to do with your password/username and remembering all of that information upon logging into steam. But because steam is crashing on starting, this might not even be there let alone necessary. Just keep that in mind.

  • @Modisc I did all that and its still giving me a seg fault.

  • The seg fault is 727 if that helps

  • Hello and terribly sorry for the late reply.
I haven’t really found much to help solve this issue.
Question: I don’t know if this will work, but are you able to check to see if you have steam-native-runtime installed.

I take it that because Steam in crashing upon start up, are you checking ``remember username and password’? If you are, could you opt for this particular instance to not select to remember it? It’s just so that it doesn’t create a config file, that’s all.
Also, could you have a look at this link, please link text

I’ m not 100 percent sure if anything there will help you but it’s at least something to help. It’s related to a language issue. I’m not sure how that works, but would you be interested in looking into it?

    EDIT: I have an idea.

    1. Consider installing Steam under the open source driver.
    2. Then install the proprietary drivers.

I understand that you’ve uninstalled / re-installed previously, but before you go ahead with the above idea, could you tell me if you’ve re-installed in that order previously?

  • I’ve tried those I’ll try that again. thanks for replying -edit cant get past the installation screen like before. uninstalling the nvidia drivers and switching to open source drivers gives me the same problems

  • @michaeljuan said in Steam seg fault:

… uninstalling the nvidia drivers and switching to open source drivers gives me the same problems

    Oh, really?
    Hmm. Ok.
Give me a day or so and see what I can come up with.
I’m also hopeful that someone else here on the board can jump in and help out if at all possible.
    The more, the merrier :Der

EDIT: I have some suggestion on determining what might be going on wrong.
There is an application called gdb.
You would run the application as so: gdb steam Use a pastebin to post the output.
You can also use strace. To use it correctly, you’d do: strace eopen steam

    1. e for expression
    2. o for finding the file
    3. p for finding the pid of steam

    debugging

Question: Your not running steam via terminal as root are you? sorry, but I do want to ask. Regular user, yes?

Also, could you please have a quick look at the Steam trouble shooting line on the Arch Wiki?
    steam trouble shooting

    1. i’m having a second look at your output. It states “invalid Window parameter“

    2. I’m also wondering that perhaps you don’t have all of the required lib files.
Just some ideas that I”ve thought of in the last little while to help with some further ideas that we could both come up with.

    3. Some other ideas is the firewall.
Do you have ufw configured. It states in the Wiki that some app’s API’s cant connect to the server if ports aren’t properly open.
