• Unable to connect to public open wifi.

I have no issues connecting to my home secured wifi with NetworkManager in Gnome. It remembers my password and auto connects. However, I am unable to connect to open unsecured wifi, at two different coffee shops and my place of employment. It was working fine with open networks in the recent past while running Fedora 25. I do have a USB wifi dongle that does work with open networks as well, but I like a challenge and would prefer to have the convenience of no dongle.

The wifi card is a Realtek rtl8192ee in a Lenovo L440. It wasn’t until kernel 4.8 or 4.9 that the kernel had driver support when I was running Fedora 24.

I’m not sure if this is a simple NetworkManger issue or at kernel driver level. I did run and save some logs on my lunch break at work today that I can post here, aimed at diagnosing the rtl8192ee, but didn’t have time to run any specific NetworkManager logs.
    lspci -k
    ip link
    ip link set wlp2s0
    dmesg | grep firmware
    dmesg | grep rtlwifi
    dmesg -w
    iwconfig

  • lspci -k, ip link, ip link set wlp2s0 up, dmesg | grep firmware, and dmesg | grep rtlwifi logs.

  • Your logs does not show any unusual stuff {[~~what do not mean that Realtek builds shitty Wireless~~ ]} ;)

How o you try to get connected with the network?

And for a quick help i would suggest to install linux-lts kernel and boot on this.

  • Thanks. Yes, the Realtek cards are notoriously fail with Linux. I connect to wifi via NM applet.

I was able to connect in a public wifi in late March, shortly after installing Antergos for the first time. I tried the LTS kernel with no luck. I triple booted Fedora 25 and Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 this AM and was only able to get UG to give me wifi, with kernel 4.8. So if both Fedora and Arch are giving me no love now, I’m guessing it’s a kernel regression/Realtek craptastic-ness.

When I bought this laptop years ago, I was running Windows at the time and had no concern for hardware compatibility. This Realtek card has been giving me headaches for some time now, with only brief kernel bliss. So I finally ordered a L440 compatible Intel 7260 card today. The Intel should hopefully be hassle free with better Linux support.

We can call this solved :).
