• pamac is very slow, almost always freezes, uses 99% cpu

im new to antergos,im using the gnome one, i really like it, so far this is the best linux ive ever used so far, wish i discovered it sooner ,but i noticed that when i start up pamac it often takes a very long time to load up and it freezes a lot, and many times it freezes up my entire system, and uses the entire cpu and i have to force shutdown , installing new software or updating my system is a trivial process , Anyone know why pamac is so slow, what could be wrong, or know any alternatives to the shitty pamac ? ive never seen anything like this happen before in linux mint or opensuse and it pisses me off,and the rest of my internet is fast.i noticied this also happened in manjaro with pamac too, but i didnt really care for manjaro at all and dont want to go back to it

  • @judd wow im amazed how fast i get a reply, i usually wait 3-4 days. what exactly does this do ? is this gonna set octopi as the default main update checker and replace pamac ?

  • If of course, these are alternatives to pamac, if you think fit, uninstall pamac and then install, to one to see which one is best for your hardware
Although for me there is no better alternative than the console or command terminal

    Mis respetos.-

  • @judd oh ok thanks

  • @cookiedemon said in pamac is very slow, almost always freezes, uses 99% cpu:

    @judd oh ok thanks

You were able to solve it ???

    Mis respetos.-

  • @judd nope, not really xd, i entered those commands but i don’t notice anything different going on here,or what these commands even did, i still have the same problem

  • @cookiedemon said in pamac is very slow, almost always freezes, uses 99% cpu:

    these commands

@judd give you only info, commands only searching for the strings (yaourt -Ss )
If you have problems with pamac GUI it is maybe caused by misconfiguration on your system, it is nor known for taking massive rescources.
Also possible that your system is kind of underpowered? little memory or slow CPU?

If you are using AUR and not only repo packages:
For terminal commandline updates and adding/removing i recommend pacaur from Antergos repo, this will cause almost no systemload on it self ;)

    sudo pacman -S pacaur

    [this is a install command]

    sudo rm -r /var/lib/pacman/sync/

    and then

    sudo pacman -Syuf

And if everything works fine install

    sudo pacman -S pacaur

    Mis respetos.-

  • @judd i did it but i get invalid , what does this mean ? ```
//[[email protected] ~]$ sudo pacman -Syuf
    error: invalid option ‘-f’
[[email protected] ~]$ sudo pacman -Syuf
    error: invalid option ‘-f’
    [[email protected] ~]$

  • Do it without the letter f would be like this

    sudo pacman -Syyu

    Mis respetos.-

  • @judd ok i installed it,do you know what i do next ? when i type pacaur in terminal nothing happens i get this
    pacaur error: no operation specified

  • I’m new to arch, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, I had a bad experience with pacman too. At first it worked fine for me, but then it got really slow. The file that controls which repositories it uses is /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist The entry at the top of the list is the one it chooses first. That mirror site became really slow. So I commented it out, and pacman started working fine again. There’s probably a better way to do this. I know there is a command to rebuild this file, but I’ve forgotten its name. Anyway I hope this helps.

  • pacaur give you the answear: "no operation specified"
You need to specify an operation: -Syu for example or -Ss

  • @Mike-Bee Im really bad at this , and worse than you , im not sure how to “comment it out” or whats going on , ive never used a linux distro with a package manager/updater that takes ages to load up, and uses 99% cpu but it doesnt take up my ram, its something new to me and bizarre , I really liked antergos, but what i may ultimately have to end up doing is reformatting back to ubuntu where things were at least a lot easier and worked , im an artist and i use krita, gimp and stuff to draw, and i want to focus on the programs and artwork, and a few games/emulators here and there, and not the OS package manager freezing up all time while trying to update and install stuff and having to enter commands which i dont understand , i dont know what a pacaur is or anything xd
