• Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd gen sound stops after playing some songs

I’m using pulseaudio and recently got the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2ng gen USB audio interface.

After connecting, input and output seem to work fine, but after playing some music with rhythmbox (or vlc, Firefox…), the sound stops right when the song changes (or randomly after some time), while the player still indicates the next song playing and I can’t get it working again without disconnecting and connecting again. E.g. when I change to a different USB sound card, the sound comes back, but changing back to the 2i2 makes it mute again.

dmesg doesn’t show anything during the whole period instead of “new high-speed USB…”. To me, there is no indication in the system that anything changed, but I can’t hear the output anymore. The direct monitoring still works though, because it’s implemented in the hardware.

I have KXStudio in dualboot (using jack) and there it works perfectly.

Any ideas how to debug this problem any further?

  • anyone? The guys on the Arch forum closed my topic on this and sent me here :D

  • Producer say no to Linux:

    but i find this too:
Scarlett 2i2 is a great choice for Linux users. You plug it in, it works flawlessly using the snd-usb-audio ALSA module.
    from here: https://www.amazon.com/Focusrite-Scarlett-Audio-Interface-Tools/dp/B01E6T56EA

    try this:

    cat /proc/asound/cards
    cat /proc/asound/modules

    and may:

    sudo lsusb

They do not provide help on Antergos, as Antergos help should be on Antergos Forum.

  • @joekamprad Thanks a ton for you reply! Ofc I can understand the Arch folks, though I’m pretty sure I’d face the exact same issue on Arch …

    However, this is the output:

  • @CBiX as we can see looks like modul is loaded…
can you try to use paprefs and push on Simultaneous Output:
    Bild Text

If your card is aviable there ? good…
If not you can have a look to:

press [F6] too choose your card/device and see if you can use it…

  • @joekamprad I was playing around a bit more but still couldn’t find any hint on what exactly happens when the sound stops. Even when I rmmod -f snd_usb_audio after the sound stops and then modprobe snd_usb_audio the sound won’t come back.

When I enable Simultaneous Output in paprefs, the issue remains: sound comes from all cards for some time, but the 2i2 stops working at some point while the other cards still work. alsamixer says “USB internal validity” no matter if sound s currently working or not.

I just verified on a Windows machine that it’s not a hardware issue.
