• (SOLVED)nvidia: blank GDM but start after killing gdm


    I have nvidia driver installed and when i boot, i see the nvidia logo as it should but then the screen stays black…

    Checked dmesg and Xorg log, no errors…

    I have to change from terminal 0 to terminal 1 in order to log under root and when i kill the xorg process, the pc switch automatically to terminal 0 and GDM appears normally !!!

    Update: just need to kill gdm-simple-slave process

  • Other finding: the Gnome screenlock is currently not working (after suspend, i return directly to desktop even if the screenlock is activated in Gnome Settings).

  • The session log should give a clue as to why gdm isnt starting successfully on the first try. Check these locations for logs:

    /var/log/gdm/ same as 2nd ^

    GDM has not been consistent in where it saves the logs lately (That’s if it even saves them at all) so one last place would be to run:

  • reinstalling gnome-settings-daemon didn’t do nothing apparently.
    I now have my screen saver that is working but not sure if it’s a system update or the above that fixed it…

  • I havent been able to come up with many new ideas here. I am hoping something in the complete journalctl log will point to the problem. Did you follow this guide completely when you installed and configured the driver? I see that you can run [code:35exd9vx]nvidia-xconfig[/code:35exd9vx] to auto config the X server. If not, perhaps a fresh install of the driver follow this process would correct any issues.?

    I also didn’t mention that nvidia was initially working (installed, reboot couple times, days after wasn’t working anymore…must be an update that did this)

  • Another thing to look into is KMS. I believe GDM now requires KMS to be enabled on the graphics driver. I have not had time to double check this assumption, but since your logs show KMS is disabled it cannot hurt to try that!

  • Will have to do more.
    Yesterday i tried removing mesa-libg (conflicting with nvidia) package from pacmanxg (pacman -Rdd mesa-lib did not found the package even tough it was installed). I saw too late that many other dependencies were uninstalled and now i completely have a black screen (no more nvidia logo)… ouch!

    I’m starting to think re-installing the whole she-bang (downloading latest iso, etc)…

    For now, i’m on Manjaro (on another partition) since Antergos is no more accessible.
    I’m considering installing something very stable instead of Manjaro (like Debian) to do some debugging stuff when Antergos is down (because of me or whatever).

  • That might be the best solution for you at this point. Just be sure to follow the wiki instructions when you setup the nvidia driver to avoid anymore issues (hopefully hehe).

  • ok, reinstalled 2 days ago, updated, nvidia reinstalled.
    Everything running smooth so far.

    Will keep an eye on every update (rebooting after each one)…
