• Cinnamon crashes on login after system update

In the morning, I was asked by Pamac to update around 110 system elements. I accepted and everything went as expected, without any errors in the terminal.

Now, Cinnamon is crashing immediately after login, showing a message asking if I want to restart it. Even if I accept it, it just crashes again.

Reinstalling Cinnamon and all of its elements does nothing.

    Which logs are needed?

    Thanks for the help.

EDIT: I managed to fix it using the fix in GitHub https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/commit/3936ac1e355e9a5f1c2edd1aae4e6da9d2855f45

It was caused because of an update to Python 3.6

  • I had the same issues this afternoon, and I believe it’s something to do with some updates that cinnamon depends on. I wasn’t able to nail what exactly cause it, but following the instructions here to rollback the updates until January 4th, 2017 (or earlier) resolved the issue for me:

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux_Archive#How_to_restore_all_packages_to_a_specific_date.

  • @osoguasu Thanks for the reply. While going through the Cinnamon Github page just now, I discovered the issue was caused by Python 3.6. This is the advised way to fix it: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/commit/3936ac1e355e9a5f1c2edd1aae4e6da9d2855f45 Rolling back updates will surely cause more harm, no?

  • @Verzwei Nice work. I’m not sure it would cause more harm, since it would revert the packages to a previous state that was working. The idea was to get the machine working again, and then go from there to fix the issue. That said, I could be wrong, but glad you were able to find a solution!
