• Abiword Gtk3 Blackened Screen

It opens with a blackened screen… It’s not background color issue, or another …

    Does anyone know ?

  • Hi,

Which Desktop Environment are you using? Gnome? Oh, and which theme?

    Can you post a screenshot?

  • @karasu Gnome Environment with Arc theme… 0_1479035769599_Screenshot from 2016-11-13 14-15-17.png

  • That’s really odd. Does this happen if you use the official Adwaita theme?

  • @karasu Yes, it continues to occur…

  • What the frack! I’ve just installed it (it has been ages since I last used it) and it shows a black background as yours!
I’ll look into it… but it seems to me that something is broken here (GTK related).

Is libreoffice not an option for you?

  • @karasu I don’t prefer to use Librethings… :/ I’m looking for web about the situation , probably won’t find a solution. But, I will wait for your investigations and solution…

  • Hi! I experience this too, 3 or 4 days ago, i wanted to install a lightweight editor with similar options to LibreOffice, but when i got the black screen i simple stopped using it.
    I’m using MATE 1.16 gtk3.
Is there a lightweight option to LibreOffice, but with similar options?

  • There’s a gtk2 version in AUR, maybe you have more luck with it:

    First remove abiword (gtk3) :
    sudo pacman -Rs abiword
    Then install abiword (gtk2):
    yaourt -S abiword-gtk2

EDIT: From the AUR page: if you want support for open/libreoffice (.odt) and newer word (.docx) and probably many other formats, edit the PKGBUILD:
remove both lines reading "–disable-*-plugins "
    no additional dependencies afaics.

    Cheers!

  • @karasu Your solution is the best indeed

I just tested some versions from Abiword here is what i found:

abiword-2.8.6-9-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz - Works perfect, but didn’t create the shortcut, you can get at /usr/bin

abiword-3.0.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz - Open with the black screen bug, but you can write and then it work, bug again when you use mouse scrool bottom, when writing get back to “normal” again. There some black colors all the time, but not prevent you from using.

    abiword-3.0.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz - Didn’t open

    abiword-3.0.1-5-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz - the same bug from 3;0.0-1

    abiword-3.0.1-7-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz - Didn’t open

(NEW) abiword-3.0.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz - All black, impossible to use

I tested also the minimal abiword from AUR, the same bug from 3;0.0-1

    abiword-gtk2 (AUR) - Works perfect!

    Cheers!

  • Hi,

Thanks for sharing your investigation ;)

We’ll have to wait for them to fix the gtk3 version.

    Cheers!

  • Hi,

As gtk3 version does not work, and the gtk2 compilation from AUR takes a while, I’ve decided to put abiword-gtk2 in our repository. I’ll keep maintaining it until gtk3 version works.

This means that you won’t have to compile it each time a new gtk2 version is released.

Oh, this version adds plugins by default, so you will be able to work with odt and docx documents ootb.

    Cheers!

  • @karasu karasu the great! Thanks friend! You are the lovely
