• SSDM Error after Upgrade

    I’m using the KDE desktop and upgraded today with a large Plasma 5.8.3 upgrade. I am using SDDM as my DM. After the upgrade completed successfully, I reboot to a blackscreen with a centered message box that displayed
    " Configuration file “/var/lib/sddm/.config/sddm-greeterrc” not writable. Please contact your system administrator."

    I clicked “ok” on the box and the SDDM DM came up, I logged in but went to a black screen with an “X” for a cursor.
    I think I need to change the permissions on the file but am unsure of how to do this.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • Hi,

    Check that your partition is mounted read/write (and not read only) with:
    sudo mount

    Then, check file permissions:
    ls -la /var/lib/sddm/.config/sddm-greterrc

  • @karasu Partitions are read/write. The file permissions were wrong. It took a bit of work but I managed to get it working.
    I’d still like to understand why it happened in the first place, though.
