• Antergos install without desktop enviroment?

So, I’ve tried to install antergos thrice today, and every time I had the same issue, I’m using minimal liveCD in VirtualBox, system is downloading and installing allright, no errors or anything, then after reboot I’m greeted with this:
(I’ve choosen XFCE that time, so lack of xfce-related packages is… yeah)

    alt text
I’ve tried that with XFCE twice and with MATE and got similar results.
I don’t know what kind of logs would you like, so if you want something let me know where I can get them…

  • Hi @krysztal

On the installed system, check /var/log/cnchi folder. All log files should be there. Post them in a post service (like pastebin) and put the link here. We’ll be glad to help.

    Cheers!

  • Okay, now I see what happened. I’d like to suggest adding some extra checks to be sure that internet connection is actually working and if it can hit any addressess…
It seems to be a timeout while accessing DNS and download fails because of that, it’s an issue completly on my side, but I can still post logs if you want

  • Well, things looks much better now, but shouldn’t this be Nmix instead of default XFCE theme?
Also, things still happening, I dunno what to do to force it do try downloading until all succeed? Is it possible?

Yes. Did you try the Mate desktop the time you posted the logs?

I dunno what to do to force it do try downloading until all succeed? Is it possible?

If one of the downloads fails, Cnchi tries 5 more mirrors until it fails. Those errors mean that some mirrors failed, but Cnchi was able to use other ones. No need to worry.

The problem is that the XFCE setup was not applied ¿?

I’ll try the XFCE version here once again, just in case.

  • Hi,

Yes, something has broken in the XFCE version. We’ll have to fix it.

  • Yes, I think the logs were from the MATE installation, and it actually still happens, after installing MATE I only have bare desktop without any panels or icons, like in the first screenshot I posted, and I’m pretty sure I fixed my connectivity issues…

    I’ll try other desktop enviroments…

  • Hi,

We found a bug in the XFCE installation. Cnchi 0.14.187 should fix it. If you want to do it yourself manually:

    • Set background wallpaper to /usr/share/antergos/wallpapers/antergos-wallpaper.png
    • Set two workspaces
    • One panel (top) with an apps menu and the window icon applet and another one (bottom) with just launch icons
    • Set theme to numix-frost and icons to numix-square
    • Set xfwm4 compositor on
    • Set menu logo to /usr/share/antergos/antergos-menu-logo-dark-bg.png

    Thanks for reporting it!

  • @krysztal Hi! Well thats exactly the way mate is installed here (i kinda liked it).
There is a very slim bar at the top of the screen (at least with me that how it happened), then you right click and add to the panel a menu bar and whatever you want.

That’s how i builded my mate, it was a very good experience to me for learning some mate funcionalities.
I believe is the same for you

  • @fernandomaroto Oh, if that’s how it works then okay. I was never in a position where an automated installer left me with completed, but totally barebone enviroment, it always was either full-featured install or do everything yourself kind of deal.

@karasu Oh, cool. Glad I could help at least a little and sorry for that mess with giving you MATE logs instead of XFCE ones. I’ll check on that update later :)

No, no, of course the purpose is to leave you a fully working system. XFCE is not that used by our user base, that’s why I think we didn’t detect this bug before (Gnome is the most used DE, and we have a lot of Cinnamon users, too).

We don’t have the man power to test each DE daily, as updates come so often. We much relay on Arch for security issues, to be honest.

  • When to wait an update version cnchi ? Received the complaint to the Mate installation, as in discussions. The repeated Mate installation will solve a problem?

  • Hi @tuxnot

No, MATE shouldn’t be affected of this bug, only XFCE.

Are you telling us that you installed MATE and ended without any desktop environment?

  • The problem was the user in the community, but I decided to help and installed on a virtual machine. And got a blank desktop.

  • Hi, yes, MATE after install has only the Antergos image and an empty grey bar at the top (i thought it was the purpose).
    Cheers

EDIT: and to enable desktop i allways install mate-tweak-desktop

  • Hi all,

I’ll check MATE desktop as soon as I can, I’m positive that the panel should have the mintmenu, but if I recall correctly, it gave us some headaches some time ago.

I’ll check it and get back to you guys asap. It’s really a problem that none of the Antergos devs use MATE, to be honest.

  • Hi,

You have to run command below on first boot to get the panel to work properly (it appears to be a bug in mate-panel). I discovered this during debugging the mint-menu port to gtk3 and I had fully intended to implement a work-around in Cnchi to handle the issue but I got busy with other things and…well, ultimately forgot all about it :grimacing:

    mate-panel --reset

  • @lots-0-logs Thanks, works. I think it would be good if by default Mate includes display of icons desktop and the right button of a mouse desktop.

  • Hi. It’s cool to see that it’s very active place and bugs are being killed pretty quickly, but…
I’ve tried to install Antergos agai today and at the end of downloading process this happened:

Sooo, I’m reporting, although without number, for obvious reason

Edit: Well, it succedeed second time, so I guess it’s okay?
