• Black lines glitch upon tty switch/suspend/shutdown/logout/lock

    Hello,

I’ve encountered some trouble with my laptop (HP EliteBook 8440p). At certain occations, my screen goes black with a movie cliché kind of effect, in which, successively and in a seeminly random order, each row of pixels go black (or near black). The “effect” continues after the entire screen has gone dark, resulting in a subtle flickering of horizontal lines. Depending on what triggered it, it might get stuck like that, which is inconvenient enough for me to ask about this here.

It is triggered by the following events:

    • Switch tty: screen goes black quite slowly, gets stuck flickering.
    • Suspend: screen goes black quite fast and computer is successfully suspended, sometimes stuck flickering on wake up.
    • Lock, log out and shutdown work as intended but not without displaying the glitch first.

It is not just a matter of Xorg crashing within tty7, because switching tty does not make the flickering go away. That does seem a bit like hardware problem, but it is obviously triggered by software.

    I am using:

    • Intel graphics driver
    • xfce4
    • lightdm-gtk-greeter
    • light-locker

Any ideas about what might be broken? I don’t know what logs may be relevant, feel free to ask for them.

    Thanks!

    EDIT:
Here are some lines from journalctl about i915 (graphics driver) and “bogus alignment”, approximately from where I attempted to switch tty, including me trying to close the lid and opening it again, and then shutting down.

  • Solved by using kernel 4.4.11-1-lts.

Also tried 4.6, but that did not help.
