• Fresh installation crashes - nouveau to blame?

I have just installed Antergos on an old desktop. Everything was chugging along nicely until… the screen froze and I just had strange white lines going across it.

I have had it crash twice on me already where I had no solution other than holding down the power button and rebooting. Looking through the logs, I’m thinking the nouveau drivers might be the cause. Based on this info, should I be looking to install proprietary drivers?

Here is the basic info on my system:

    Hi,

Yes, I’d try to install nvidia driver to see if it helps.

You might need nvida-304xx but I’m not sure.
    Check this out : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Installing

    Cheers!

  • OK, installed the NVidia driver. I’ll see if that helps.

  • The 1st thing I always do on gnome is install the nvidia driver no matter the distro. It always hangs with the free drivers for some reason.

  • Well, after crashing 3 times in the first couple of hours, it hasn’t crashed once since I switched drivers, so I’m marking this one as solved.

Thanks for the help on this.
