• \[SOLVED\] Slow wifi start-up


    Have been getting some slow wifi start ups over the last week or so. The only programs that starts up on system boot is dropbox and ufw. I don’t think those would contribute to much of having wifi being delayed on startup.
    Something in the neighborhood of about a minute or so.

    EDIT: I’ve decided to have dropbox not startup on Antergos start up. I guess we’ll see; however, I still doubt that this process/program is going to delay startup.

    also, since I disable Dropbox start up, wifi has been connecting quicker. But I don’t understand why that would be. Maybe Dropbox is wanting to start up first before the network wants to connect? I have dropbox connecting on start up on some of the other distros and I don’t believe that the same problem exists. Maybe it’s a bit of a delay but not really all that much.

    With Antergos, at times ([i:6uh6ybsf]before dropbox was disabled on startup)[/i:6uh6ybsf] it could at times take about 1/2 minute or so before the network could finally connect. I don’t understand how dropbox could interfere with network connections wanting to establish itself.

  • I don’t see how dropbox could effect your network connection in that way. It likely has something to do with the timing of systemd enabling the connection. If there is a problem, it will be logged in the journal. I’ll need to see the entire output. You can output it directly to a file using “sudo journalctl -b > ~/journal.log” and attach it or do a dropbox share if that’s easier

  • Okay thanks for the logs. Just an FYI for future reference if you add [b:1ivcuz1z]> ~/journal.log[/b:1ivcuz1z] to the end of journalctl command, it will save the journal to a file named journal.log inside your /home dir.

    Have you made any changes to your network configuration in regards to netctl or dhpcd? The reason I ask is because there are some errors indicating that the wireless device is being grabbed before systemd has had a chance to rename it during boot.

  • Okay could you output the logs to a file like I mentioned earlier. The copy and paste method does not grab any text that is not visible on the screen so a lot of lines are cut in the middle.

  • It looks like the dhpcd daemon is enabled. It should not be necessary when using NetworkManager so here’s what I’d advise:

    1. Disable dhpcd: [b:2rmr3xbz]sudo systemctl disable dhpcd[/b:2rmr3xbz]
    2 . Enable ModemManager: [b:2rmr3xbz]sudo systemctl enable ModemManager[/b:2rmr3xbz]
    [list:2rmr3xbz]If for some reason it isn’t installed then go ahead and install it with pacman[/list:u:2rmr3xbz]
    3. Install dropbox NM hook (starts dropbox when connection is ready):
    [list:2rmr3xbz][b:2rmr3xbz]yaourt -S networkmanager-dispatcher-dropbox-systemd [/b:2rmr3xbz][/list:u:2rmr3xbz]

  • Hi and thanks for the response. I was about to install the networkmanager-dispatcher-dropbox-systemd for dropbox; however, the output from the console mentioned it is a potentially dangerous and unsupported package. So I did not install that package.

    Thirdly, with respect to that, I don’t have direct access to a router. I use the router that my landlord has. Both him and I share it. I just don’t have access to it. Should this be a consideration prior to disabling dhcpd?

    EDIT: So I went ahead with the first 2 commands and connectivity to the internet is not an issue. Just have not done the [i:3h50blos]networkmanager-dispatcher-dropbox-systemd[/i:3h50blos]. At least not yet.
    Looking for feedback on the comments that are there on this package prior to install.

    This is a standard disclaimer that you will see when installing any packages from the AUR. It is to remind you that the PKGBUILDS in the AUR are created and maintained by other users and not the official Arch or Antergos developers. As such, you should familiarize yourself with the PKGBUILD format and process so you can check them for any inconsistencies (unintended and even perhaps intended by the submitter) before installing anything. I can tell you that while its certainly possible for an AUR PKGBUILD to harm your system when installed, I have not come across any myself. The community at large does a good job of reporting mistakes and other issues and getting them corrected. You can learn more about the AUR at these links:

    The dhpcd daemon is not meant to be used in conjunction with Network Manager. Network Manager is the default and recommended method of managing desktop network connections. It does not matter which router you use to connect.
