• \[SOLVED\]Too many packages

    Hi there,

I installed MATE, on my openbox system.
I have a problem with the display managers, because I used slim and I installed lightdm, but I solved.

My problem is, I have 830 package. I think this is too many, because before the installation, I have just 73X.
How can I reduce this number?
Which package are unnecessary for me?

  • Well, that’s actually a reasonable difference considering you installed an additional desktop. One thing you could look into is if you have installed anything that brought with it all the QT libs as that will add anywhere from 10-20 packages. Other than that, and short of removing one of the desktops, just remove programs you don’t use. You can also check pacman’s list of orphan packages which will probably include at least a few that you don’t use.

    Best Regards,

I show here 1779 packages installed! How’d ya get so few??

HAHA…I have a bad habit of installing things I don’t really need and then forgetting to remove them LOL…About two months ago I finally decided I needed to start from a clean slate and reformatted my drives. I had 2200+ packages installed at that point. Now two months later I am sitting at 1400

    Cheers!

  • Bad habits are hard to break I guess!

    Yes they are, my friend…

BTW, from what I can tell, JavaScript must be on for our votes of support to count on DW. A lot of people use noscript and such…anyway, you get the picture; for your wording, I don’t know.

  • Running the pacman -Qdt command lists all packages that are orphaned. This means that no currently installed and necessary packages on your system need these.

So yes, it is ok to remove them.

If you install something in the future that requires one or more of them, they will be reinstalled at that time.

    Okay, thank you!

  • Keep in mind that , just becuase a package is an orphan does not always mean you aren’t using it. I don’t recommend blindly removing them. You should have a quick look to see if anything stands out as something you are using. Of course if you do remove something from the orphan list that you needed, it won’t result in a system failure so its easy to just reinstall it.

    Best Regards,

  • Thank you the advice
But I already removed them, and the system works, YET.
