• Freezes on high memory usage

    Hi,

    I have a problem with freezing applications and/or system. It only occurs while using RAM intensive programs, but it doesn’t seem to matter which programs. Examples for such a freezing condition are:

    • Running Win 10 in VirtualBox
    • Running Knime (Tool for Data-Analyses, based on Eclipse)
    • Running multiple Medium-Sized Applications together, like Firefox with lots of tabs + GIMP + Inkscape…

    Does anybody have an idea, how I can track down the problem? My instinct tells me, it might be a problem with SWAP, but don’t have a proof :-P

    Thanks!

    PS:
    Up-to-date Antergos with Gnome
    248 GB SSD-HD (with plenty free space)
    4 GB RAM
    Lenovo Thinkpad T410

    If you have no conky that tracks the swap usage in real time, it is always possible to check it in terminal:

    swapon -s

    It could also depend on swappiness (it defines when Linux starts to push RAM content out to the SWAP). What is your swappiness?

    $ cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
    10
    $

    Less the value is, more RAM and less SWAP are used. Varies from 1 to 100. Don’t touch extreme values, otherwise you’ll block the system.

  • @Jacky-B. Please install the ps_mem package and then post the output of the following commands during an occurrence of the issue:

    sudo ps_mem
    free -m

  • Thanks! Just now, another freeze appeared: I was running VirtualBox (but doing nothing there) and had Firefox (working with lots of tabs). Both apps freezed. I did the commands as suggested.

    It seems to, when the RAM is running full, applications that are using this RAM are running crazy with CPU Usage. Anything i can do about it?

  • To stop freezing do as following:

    Test the system for errors
    Go to support.lenovo.com and go to the downloads page for your specific machine type. Download, install and run the Diagnostic tools that are available for your machine.
    Remove and reseat all hardware (power supply, battery, cables, adapters, memory, etc.).
    Note: Remove all of the hardware from the system first, and then wait for 30 seconds before reconnecting any of the hardware. Please try these one at a time to help determine if there is a specific device or function causing the issue.
    Disconnect the AC adapter.
    Remove the battery pack if it is externally accessible. If you have an internal battery, please use the battery reset button
    Remove the system memory.
    Remove the system hard drive.

    If still issue exits proceed to another solution given in Lenovo Thinkpad T410 Manual-
