• [SOLVED] Shadow Service Exiting on Bootup

After uninstalling a couple of desktop environments – at least I think that’s what’s caused it – I’ve been getting an error message on bootup. So I ran journalctl -b -0 > /tmp/journal and it came up with…

      • shadow.service - Verify integrity of password and group files
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/shadow.service; static; vendor preset: disabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Fri 2015-10-02 01:38:45 BST; 50min left
        Process: 460 ExecStart=/usr/bin/pwck -r (code=exited, status=2)
        Main PID: 460 (code=exited, status=2)
    • Oct 02 01:38:44 melchizedek systemd[1]: Starting Verify integrity of password and group files…
Oct 02 01:38:45 melchizedek pwck[460]: user ‘kdm’: directory ‘/var/lib/kdm’ does not exist
Oct 02 01:38:45 melchizedek pwck[460]: user ‘lxdm’: directory ‘/var/lib/lxdm’ does not exist
Oct 02 01:38:45 melchizedek pwck[460]: pwck: no changes
      Oct 02 01:38:45 melchizedek systemd[1]: shadow.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=2/INVALIDARGUMENT
Oct 02 01:38:45 melchizedek systemd[1]: Failed to start Verify integrity of password and group files.
Oct 02 01:38:45 melchizedek systemd[1]: shadow.service: Unit entered failed state.
      Oct 02 01:38:45 melchizedek systemd[1]: shadow.service: Failed with result ‘exit-code’.

I don’t even have lxdm installed. Any ideas how to fix it?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

You need to delete the accounts you are no longer using in /etc/passwd and also the groups in /etc/group

    Cheers!

  • Thank you! Will mark as solved.
