• [SOLVED] Could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/core.db: Unrecognized archive format

    Updating with
    yaourt -Syua

    gave me the following error message today:

    error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/core.db: Unrecognized archive format

    The solution given first at the forum thread (Solved) Pacman Won’t Update Software by lots.0.logs solved the problem for me, for your information:
    sudo gedit /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    and then copying and pasting the code given next at that forum post into the ‘mirrorlist’ file.

    In case this can be of interest for Antergos development, when I checked my mirrorlist before attempting the solution, I got a listing of three servers that didn’t work today:

    $cat /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    # Server list generated by rankmirrors on 2015-05-14
    # Server list generated by rankmirrors on 2015-05-09
    # Server list generated by rankmirrors on 2015-04-28
    # Server list generated by rankmirrors on 2015-04-15
    # Server list generated by rankmirrors on 2015-04-01
    # Server list generated by rankmirrors on 2015-03-31

    ################# Arch Linux mirrorlist generated by Reflector #################

    Server = http://mirror.umd.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
    Server = http://lug.mtu.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch

    When checking those three servers mentioned last in my own way (by opening those URLs in a web browser), I get ‘404 Not Found’-type results for all of them.

    Perhaps there is a bug when I had recently launched pacmanXG and did tasks ‘Synchronize mirrors’ or ‘Find 3 fastest mirrors (not for Manjaro)’? Anyway, Antergos is updating fine now, as I wrote above, after finishing the steps including running the last command instructed in that forum post:
    sudo pacman -Syyu

    Also, as I note that the moderator asked at the time for the log of /var/log/cnchi-DATE-OF-INSTALL.log , I am uploading it too in case it can be of use to you:

    logs.tar

    NB: Antergos is a delight to run and work with having used a fair number of other distros (some were very pleasant too) and environments (including the shipped W*N 8 environment). I didn’t expect that my laptop could run at such a cool temperature, so quietly and so responsively, and in such a pleasant (Gnome) GUI, and with an ease to install!

    Best wishes to you

    And I recall antergos.info is the source, and not simply a mirror.

    Sorry @Wyn , didn`t get you…What do you mean?

    I believe antergos.info is the source of what’s put on the other mirrors (/pacman.d/antergos-mirrorlist). I usually check it after using reflector for the mains.

  • I should clarify that the solution that was offered in that link quoted above was for a different error message than the one I got, as I now realize, so I am sorry: somehow I rushed to publicize my findings but it is just that I used the mirrorlist supplied in that forum post to attempt to replace the server mirrors that weren’t working for me. I realize that that may by no means be the recommended practice.

    @anarch
    Thanks for the tip - very useful. I plan to try yaourt -Syyua when my updates get interrupted again, as I can see how useful and appropriate that command can be in that case. I found an explanation about that at: https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=16534.0
    Cheers :)
