• Memory leak in cinnamon

since it updated, it has gotten out of control on memory usage. It used to hover around 80-100mb. But now can push to 300 or over easily for seemingly no reason.

  • Hi,

This is a bug that the Cinnamon devs are working on. You can follow the discussion here:

I do want to note that I use Cinnamon as my daily driver and while this memory leak is certainly occurring, it isn’t having any negative effect on my system’s performance. Though I should mention that I am in the habit of shutting down my system every night which is definitely preventing me from feeling negative effects of the bug.

  • I definitely have only noticed this since Jan. 23 update and had no problem in november. So I am not sure if it is the same bug. I did search the github issues page, but only recent ones because the memory leak has only occured with 2.4.6-1.

Though, lestcape seems to have had a way worse problem than anything I’ve seen. He shows 5gb of RAM used on the garbage collector he is advertising!

I restart cinnamon from the panel if I see it is using too much memory, and shut the laptop down daily. And it still occurs.

  • Well I believe many of the cases being reported on the github issue are based on leaving a system running for one or two weeks without any reboots. That’s not typical of most users. Though I could see how my memory usage would go that extreme if I was to leave my system up that long. The leak is a small and consistent drip

  • I confirm that this is rather serious issue that needs to be addressed asap.
Its not disturbing as long as you have > 2gb of ram

  • Strangely it hasn’t been happening lately. Maybe I triggered it somehow without knowing.

It kind of hovers around 130-150mb these days. Which isn’t bad. Though certainly a bit more than previous versions of cinnamon. Have no idea what justifies using more memory when all the cinnamon team seem to have added in the latest iteration is to make the theming system a bit worse. But whatever…

lol, not, thats is not the case, just few hours. The problems that I was experimented was not a memory leak. Was the garbage collector. Properly, with a common use, you will get that value on some days (like you say if is a little memory leaks), but when you have more memory, is more easy that the garbage collector becomes lazy. Additional to this problem I experimented another TRUE memory leaks. When i will try to get a print screen, my memory will be increased some more MB… After login and with the garbage collector problem and as I known the real cause, I try to find the problem, so i repeat the print screen several times to see what happen. I don’t found the where exactly was the problem, but i could reproduce problem easy.

Print screen problems: I could fix the problem deleting my profile and then created it again. See:
    https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/3657

The another problem (The garbage collector) was resolved here:
    https://github.com/linuxmint/cjs/pull/17

    Regards…
