• \[ SOLVED\] Issues installing/setting up Steam on Antergos

Hi. I’ve searched around the board here on installing Steam on Antergos. Some of the posts are in Spanish and others are discussions on if Arch-based systems are ok in installing Steam on.
I realize that Arch is not officially supported on Steam. I do not feel like switching to Ubuntu as the Steam website suggests. I prefer Antergos.
I’ve also gone to the Arch Wiki on installing Steam with no positive results. Here’s what I’ve done including machine specs:

    [frankenstein@Antergos-Acer ~]$ lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)

    [frankenstein@Antergos-Acer ~]$ uname -a
    Linux Antergos-Acer 3.18.2-2-ARCH \#1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jan 9 07:37:51 CET 2015 x86\_64 GNU/Linux

    I am using Antergos KDE.
Here are the suggested graphics drivers that the I am being given as an option:

    [frankenstein@Antergos-Acer ~]$ pacman -Ss xf86-video

    [frankenstein@Antergos-Acer ~]$

According to the Arch Wiki, the default driver is [b:1ko6q139]xf86-video-vesa[/b:1ko6q139]
I believe this is the driver I currently have as I installed that one.
I have also enabled [i:1ko6q139]multilib[/i:1ko6q139] repository. I noticed that[i:1ko6q139] mulitlib-testing[/i:1ko6q139] is also enabled; however, that is probably defaulted any ways.
Instead of [i:1ko6q139]ttf-liberation[/i:1ko6q139], I opted for the[u:1ko6q139] default fonts provided for by Steam[/u:1ko6q139].
According to the ARch Wiki, because I have a 64-bit machine, I installed [i:1ko6q139]lib32-alsa-plugins[/i:1ko6q139] to enable sound in 32-bit games. It was not necessary for me to install any Asian languages for STeam.
    I have also installed [i:1ko6q139]lib32-mesa-libgl[/i:1ko6q139]

I cannot get the Steam client to start up or run. It’s not in Lancelot Launcher within KDE. When logging into the web interface of Steam, everything is all good. Of course when offering to install Steam on Linux, Steam sends me a [i:1ko6q139].deb[/i:1ko6q139] file (meant for Debian-based distros). Naturally, I can’t use this particular file.

    One final thought:

    [root@Antergos-Acer frankenstein]\# pacman -Q java-common
error: package 'java-common' was not found

Do I need this package for Steam? I don’t see anything on the Arch Wiki for this as a requirement. But if necessary I can install this if necessary.

If wanting or needing other information, please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks in advance for your help. :)

PS. I mentioned earlier that Steam gives me a .deb file. I realize that there exists this for Arch: [url:1ko6q139]https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/dpkg[/url:1ko6q139] but the warnings on using this under Arch are too strong. Therefore I’d rather not utilize it.

  • Hi,

Make sure you have this installed:

    sudo pacman -S lib32-mesa-libgl
    yaourt -S jre

    Cheers!

  • hi lot.0.logs.
I have installed the [i:six4clae]lib32-mesa-libgl[/i:six4clae] along with the [i:six4clae]jre[/i:six4clae]. Still nothing even after having rebooted. I don’t see the Steam client
There is a Games section but there is only PoL which I installed previously.

  • What happens when you actually try to run steam via cmd line? I’ve used steam on antergos with intel integrated graphics, so I know it doesn’t physically (or spiritually) require ubuntu.

  • hmmm…When I type in steam in terminal, it just states no such program. i did do [i:1sudrjp3]sudo pacman -S steam[/i:1sudrjp3] along with all the dependencies I mentioned in my first post.
    I must be missing something.

  • Steam package should install among other things /usr/bin/steam, and /usr/bin is in PATH by default. Do you not have this file?

  • Hi axaxs.
I checked your directory given. There is neither a folder or a file with Steam on it. I know for sure that twice I did [i:2vl0oi4r]sudo pacman -S steam[/i:2vl0oi4r].
    I also tried[i:2vl0oi4r] yaourt pacman -S steam[/i:2vl0oi4r].

    frankenstein@Antergos-Acer ~]$ yaourt pacman -S steam

For the 3rd time, I chose to re-install. Have a look at the bottom of the Terminal output as well as this following message occuring near the beginning of output:
[b:2vl0oi4r]error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)[/b:2vl0oi4r]

Not too sure however, I suspect that the errors occuring are due to the files currently existing. But again, there is no steam folder in /usr/bin either as there most likely should be. I went through all the steps on the Arch Wiki on installing Steam. I don’t believe I missed anything. I installed all the dependancies as well.

  • You must either use yaourt or pacman, not both!

Also, to solve this problem of yours, you may use the --force command, so you should type:

    sudo pacman -S steam --force

    Cheers!

  • wow. thanks karasu. This did it. A simple[i:3step3jj] --force[/i:3step3jj] command. I could kick myself. LOL.
Thread set as solved. Thanks again. :)
