• No button icons in minitube

I’ve looked on the minitube forum, but the creator of this app always dodges the question why the play, stop, etc. buttons at the top are not drawn in mate and many other DEs. It works properly in cinnamon, but not many others. I figure it is just something obvious about MATE that I’ve missed.

Any guesses? In cinnamon it looks like this:

in mate and others like this:

  • I’d say that the application can’t handle the DE specific processes for the layout of this software within that DE. Only a certain(s) one.

Download " antergos-wallpapers-extra " and enjoy community sponsored wallpapers.

Use the "Linux Beginner Search Engine"

    I agree.

    @jns
If this guy is dodging the question it means he knows the problem exists and doesn’t care to fix it. I wouldn’t bother though, just use [b:1jdziloz]youtube-dl[/b:1jdziloz].

  • youtube-dl is not really the same.

Minitube isn’t for downloading youtube videos, but subscribing to channels without an account and watching them without flash.

  • Youtube’s default is HTML5 now so you can just use HTML5 instead of Flash. :)

  • I use it for subscriptions and don’t have much problem with flash itself; that’s just an added feature. Though I appreciate it removing annoying annotations. Even still, I use firefox which doesn’t default to html5 yet even if that was an issue. You have to use an addon which I think is more annoying than it is worth and won’t play older videos.

I’m using Cinnamon for the time being.

I also have other problems with MATE like the terrible fonts and icons on the panel that look really bad using any theme other than Mint’s. Whether it is ugliness or the fact that they don’t adapt to your colors and so are invisible. MATE just becomes a chore, besides being bad from a design standpoint. Mint has made it work, but no one else focuses on it so it is an afterthought.

Interesting use of it. I actually just use the website for subs and I use FlashGot + MPV to watch the videos. Though I understand is not a single solution so might be off-putting to some.

I have no issues with HTML5 in Firefox but that might be because I use the Nightly version of Firefox so maybe it is just because I have the newest alpha code that it has been changed.

Icons in the panel are not controlled by the iconset, they are controlled by the apps and in some cases some iconsets do try to cover those icons as well but it is not a very common thing to do because there are also thousands of icons to compensate for, so it is not really that practical to do.

I think Numix looks good on Antergos MATE provided the theme issue was fixed on window borders, I’m pretty sure that was fixed though. Icons like I said are a monsterous task. Mint makes a lot of money and only work on their tools and DE so it probably gives them more time to deal with polish elements like that.

I think Antergos team does a fantastic job with polish on all DEs considering not having funding and how many DEs they support.

Anyway, I’ll take a look into it to see if I can figure out why the icons are not displaying though.

Youtube very recently switched over to HTML5 for all browsers. Only browsers which don’t support HTML5 will fallback to flash. Firefox has supported HTML5 for quite a while now.

    Cheers!

  • IDK about minitube but if ‘subscription’ isn’t the main thing that you’re looking for then you may use smtube. (Thats what I use)
It does both what minitube does(streaming without flash) and what youtube-dl does.

For sure you’ll not face any ‘no icons displaying’ problem. (because it doesn’t have any xD )
it works with the installed media players (whichever is selected in its settings).

    Archlinux x64

    AMD A4-3305M Processor
    6GB RAM
    1GB+512MB Hybrid AMD GPU

Just so you know, MPV has built-in support for youtube-dl. :)

  • I only have minitube for subscriptions. That is the primary purpose of the app – though searching and watching also work.

The nightly version uses html5, but stable firefox is just playing flash for now.

Firefox runs html5, but not quite as well as Chrome. On html5test.com, FF still only scores 449/555, Chrome gets 501, while Chromium curiously gets 511.
