• After update, touchpad doesn’t work


    Yesterday I did an update that downloaded a little more thab 200 MB. I keep updates current, usually updating one or more times per day as Pacman informs me updates are available. After the update the touchpad no longer worked, but I attached a USB mouse and it works.

    After doing a little research I ran libinput debug-events. A screenshot of the output is attached.

    I didn’t really understand where to go from there. I subsequently turned off the computer and when I turned it on again, the touchpad worked. I thought the problem was solved, but it wasn’t.

    The next time I turned the computer on, the touchpad wasn’t working. I’ve repeated this cycle several times and it does the same.

    1. Start computer-touchpad doesn’t work
    2. Run libinput debug-events
    3. Start computer-touchpad works.
    4. Start computer-touchpad doesn’t work

    I didn’t usually run libinput debug-events when the touchpad was working, but I decided to see what its results are if the touchpad is working, só I ran it. I got basically the same result: several “Failed to open” lines. The next time I started the computer, the touchpad still worked.

    So, it appears that if I run libinput debug-events during a session, the next time I start the computer, the touchpad will work. If I don’t run it, the next time I start the computer, the touchpad WON’T work.

    This morning, Pacman informed me updates were available, so I did the update hoping it would fix the problem. It did not.

    What should I do?

    So when touch do NOT work there is a touchpad recognized, and if it is working not?

  • Logs show that ELAN0501 is recognized as both Mouse and Touchpad when it is working. Device ID is 04F3:3019.

    And opposite when it is not working. Device ID is not recognized.

    But why, couldn’t tell.

    Have you tried using another kernel? If that works, then the reason may be a slightly incompatible kernel or driver modification in the update.

  • @manuel @arpeasal yes I would try switching to LTS kernel to see if this solve the issue…

  • you need to choose Antergos Advanced Options from Bootmenu and choose LTS to boot, if not you boot with the standard kernel.

    Well, that didn’t work. In the advanced options there are four boot options: Regular Antergos, Regular Antergos-Fallback, LTS and LTS-Fallback. I tried both the LTS and the LTS-Fallback boot options and with both I still have a touchpad that doesn’t work.

  • I’m currently have a working touchpad because I ran libinput debug-events before I shut down the last time. I’ll shutdown again so the touchpad won’t be working and then run xinput again.
