• Broken Grub 2 configuration on fresh install

    Hello guys,

Found something odd while installing today and I can’t figure out what happened.
Fresh install that I did like 3 times today would not boot, fooled a little bit with it, found out that it tried to start but all i was getting were some stack traces from the login of gnome.
Did a fresh install again, same issue, i look at the options try fallback, still same issue, eventually i go in grub:
Advanced-> Antergos Linux and it boots just fine every time.
Compared the entries from the menu, the one that did not boot had missing tab characters, which i find weird because it’s a fresh install with wiped drive.

    Here are the entries:
    Working:

    	load_video
    	set gfxpayload=keep
    	insmod gzio
    	insmod part_gpt
    	insmod ext2
    	if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
    	  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 11d1347b-7e12-40b4-bb97-b4638d90ce7d
    	else
    	  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 11d1347b-7e12-40b4-bb97-b4638d90ce7d
    	fi
    	echo	'Loading linux kernel ...'
    	linux	/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=fe499497-bfc2-482c-8497-24175713659a rw quiet resume=UUID=6ec9c01c-af46-49f0-96d0-cb563597b318
    	echo	'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
    	initrd	/intel-ucode.img /initramfs-linux.img

    Not working:

    load_video
    set gfxpayload=keep
    insmod gzio
    insmod part_gpt
    insmod ext2
    if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
      search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 11d1347b-7e12-40b4-bb97-b4638d90ce7d
    else
      search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 11d1347b-7e12-40b4-bb97-b4638d90ce7d
    fi
    echo	'Loading linux kernel ...'
    linux	/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=fe499497-bfc2-482c-8497-24175713659a rw quiet resume=UUID=6ec9c01c-af46-49f0-96d0-cb563597b318
    echo	'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
    initrd	/intel-ucode.img /initramfs-linux.img

There are exact copy paste from the grub settings.

Using an AMD Athlon 200GE with an AsRock AB350M-HDV motherboard.
    uname -a output:
    Linux user-pc 4.18.16-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Oct 20 22:06:45 UTC 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

    Anyone encountered this?

You should not use intel-ucode.img on AMD. Not sure though if it actually causes any trouble, but you could try removing that /intel-ucode.img from the initrd line.

  • @manuel I will try to remove it, boots fine with it, I managed to find that the faulty package was PCSX2, some dependency to it, edits the grub file, not sure why would it do that though.

  • @manuel removing the intel part just completely kills it and it doesn’t start

    Very strange.
