• Light browsers for less than 512 MB ram

    Hey all!

I’d like some advise from my fellows :)

Which are the ligthests web browsers out there? I’m thinking about systems with less than 512 MB ram memory… I tried firefox and it’s slow. Iknow that min and midori are light browsers, but i accept any tip you might have.

I wish the browser to be powerfull enough to play youtube videos and to able to use adblockers (so the browser won’t freeze).

    Any tips?

    Thanks!

  • Hmmm… I’ve used Min before, and really enjoyed it. However, as for others, I don’t know. Wish I could be more helpful, but I’m as interested to see what alternatives and options there might be as you are here 😄 .

  • You can try Falkon (formerly known as Quipzilla) It’s light and it has a adblocker build in.

  • Good advises! Thanks!

    Hi!
I tried running a 32 bits VM with 400 MB ram, none of them play youtube videos gets slow/freeze the machine, like firefox, falkon among others.

I discovered one nice thing though:

SMTube is an extra app from community repo which allows you to search youtube videos and play them with smplayer, and this is a player i use already, ins’t heavy considering system usage and videos didn’t freeze. Ran fine with 400 MB ram !!

Beyhond that browsing is fine (not thinking about youtube) using netsurf, midori, falkon, even firefox, etc. (i only used one tab and don’t expect more than that)

I Also added the addblocking dns server from https://alternate-dns.com to /etc/resolv.conf and browsing gets better, reducing the need of addblockers inside the browser itself, though it’s not perfect.

@fernandomaroto i would like to introduce you to suckless.org:
    https://surf.suckless.org/

Thanks @joekamprad I didn’t know about surf, unfortunately it also freezes or gets super slow with youtube…

I think the only alternative is having a browser and an extra youtube player, i’ll test minitube here too. youtube-viewer is slow here too…

  • @fernandomaroto
I’m surprised you got Falkon running in a 32 bit VM!!!

    It’s super slow actually

  • No wonder, I thought Falkon was only optimized for 64 bit.

  • @bryanpwo

    I guess maintainers form archlinux32 repacked it… Don’t know…

  • @fernandomaroto i would say the problem with youtube is not caused by the browser it self, it is the way youtube is streaming and rendering video, if i compare the different browsers load on CPU and graphics are very huge on all of them, if i do streaming from other services it have only 1/3 of the load on GPU and CPU …

but if you use a script like this without loading youtube webside itself and play video with mplayer… load on yt videos is much lessload producing:

  • @joekamprad
That’s a nice script! I think SMTube does basically the same, using a simple interface for searching videos and then redirecting them to smplayer.

I’ll try to push the VM to its limit, i’ll reduce ram memory again and see what still work.
I made an empty i3-wm entry to sddm and that uses only 90 ram MB using conky, so i think is still possible to change the ram to 256 and play a youtube video…

i was using fluxbox on my E600 and without any DM, but today i would take i3 for sure.

    Have you ever tested ratpoison?
Ratpoison can load any other wm/desktop inside itself, like openbox, xfce4 etc etc. it’s nice after the learning curve (not that hard for whom uses i3).

  • Wow! Never heard of ratpoison before :) . Going to have to give it a try I think…
