• Laptop display is not being set-up correctly

    Hi all!
I am using a Dell XPS 15 with 4K display. I am having some problem in X auto-configuring my laptop’s display.
If I connect an external monitor, X works fine. But if I disconnect it, from the logs, I see that X server gets successfully shut down. If I use LTS kernel, I am able to use my laptop display without any issues. But without connecting an external monitor I am unable to use my laptop’s built-in display using the latest kernel. I have included /var/log/Xorg.1.log file. My log file is available on pastebin. Looking at lines with (EE), I see that there is some problem in setting the correct modeline for my laptop’s display. I don’t have any custom configuration files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. Please let me know if any further information is needed.

    Thanks in advance.

  • I don’t owe a Dell XPS, so this is a shot in the dark. Have you looked on the Dell website, maybe there are firmware updates you’ve missed?

  • Thank you for your suggestions. From the Xorg logs, it seems that the modesetting driver tries to set 1920x1080 resolution for my built-in 4K display based on the history of monitor configurations saved in ~/.config/monitors.xml. I found this information in a post on Unix stackexchange. Ater deleting the monitor.xml file, my laptop display is working but with the default 3840x2160 resolution only. If I try to set the resolution to 1920x1080, Xorg crashes again. If I switch to the LTS kernel, I am able to use my laptop’s display in 1920x1080 resolution. So there is something wrong with the 4.17 kernel and the intel graphics driver, I suspect.
