• Screen flicker i915 HD Graphics 620 in kernel 4.16

    I’m having this weird flicker happening when I boot into 4.16 kernels, but not when I downgrade to 4.5.11.

    I’m using Wayland and Gnome.

    Gfycat of the flickering

    Any idea how to troubleshoot or escalate this?

    My kernel parameters are:
    i915.enable_rc6=0 i915.enable_psr=0 i915.enable_guc_loading=1 i915.enable_guc_submission=1

    My lspci reveals:
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 620 (rev 02)

    Writing the following into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel-graphics.conf may help:

    Section "Device"
       Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
       Driver      "intel"
       Option      "TearFree"     "true"
    EndSection

  • Screen flickering
    Panel Self Refresh (PSR), a power saving feature used by Intel iGPUs is known to cause flickering in some instances

    A temporary solution is to disable this feature using the kernel parameter i915.enable_psr=0
